Potential Contest idea

Just for fun, I was wondering if anyone is still around to be interested in doing a contest. The goal would be to make a skin using only black and white (and gray tones) to see who could come up with the most interesting and creative monochrome skin. This forum's been pretty dead lately, so my hopes aren't too high, but sometimes a contest can jump-start this place.

I'd love to take part in a contest, however I'm tied up at the minute waiting for someone to sign off on another skin I'm involved with, maybe they could check their mail and let me know....[whistle]

It's an awesome idea. I'm keen for it. I've never really participated in a contest. How would it go down?

I love skin contests, and I'd definitely be interested. Although it would have to have a pretty lenient deadline (like two months or something like that) for me to have hope of finishing it on time. My schedule is a little hectic at the moment.

I really like the monochrome idea, too.

I'd be in, although I kind of doubt I'd finish. But I'd try, at least.

Yeah, the deadline will be very lenient, and fairly far off, probably late September/early October, but I'm glad to see that people are interested. I'll try to come up with a more specific cohesive plan in the next few days.

You should be more worried about finishing than starting

LuigiHann: If the deadline is in October, then count me in as a 95% probable entrant. I've fallen in love with Adobe Illustrator, and I'd love to use it to make a skin, and as I said, I love contests, so I'll be quite eager to join. Just a question, though it's probably pretty premature: How strict will you be on the black and white? Will we be allowed to add a splash of colour, providing that we maintain a 'monochrome' look? For example, a sepia skin? or instead of black & white, black & cream? or black & red? or white & red?

Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.

How's this sound, SW, Black, White, and no more than one color. That would allow for sepia tones, or maybe one red object standing out, perhaps, but anything with more than one color is out. I mean, monochrome means "one color" anyway It's more about the theme than the limitations, but for the most part I'd like to see what people can do without color.

Luigi: Well, the only reason that I ask is that I think that black and white can have a somewhat sterile appearance. It's totally fine for many things of course, but my current idea is something that would really benefit from a slightly more 'earthy' tone. So I would like to see my skin in a slightly off-white or 'creamy' version of black and white - that's all.

I quite like the restrictiveness of the idea, and I think that allowing "one other colour", like you suggested, is maybe even being too lenient. I would suggest (though it's not my contest so feel free to ignore me of course) that if a skin uses black, and then it does use red, for example, then it should no longer be allowed to use white. It would only be allowed to use red, black, and all the darker shades of red in between. So that way it still remains strictly duo-tone, which I think keeps it pretty loyal to the original idea.

Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.

One other color = one color period, or one color and versions of that color (light to dark)?

I would assume it would be something like that one color where the CMY values are the same, but the K value varies (since then its just "mixing" with black and white (kinda, but you get it)

Maybe I should let StillWater write the official rules.
But basically, I think what I'll go with is: If there's a color, it replaces grey. What I suggest, to best keep the theme, is to start the skin using only black and white and then in photoshop make a solid-colored layer at the very top and set it to "color" in the blending options. This lets you keep both black and white, but replaces all shades of grey with shades of one color. You can also set the layer to "multiply" to replace white with your color, or "screen" to replace black with your color. Feel free to play around with different effects, but ultimately the skin should be totally monochrome. I will be fairly lenient, but I now expect not to see any skins using both grey and a color. Does that make sense? See my attachment for an illustration of some acceptable color schemes (Using my started skin as an example ).
The totally arbitrary due date I'm setting is OCTOBER 16. This is flexible. I haven't decided if I'll allow voting, or if I'll just judge them myself If I can come up with a worthwhile prize I'll announce it, but most likely the top 3 will be getting photoshopped trophies, unless anyone has anything better to suggest (Or donate! ) Once I've decided that stuff, I'll start an "official contest thread."
Feel free to post your ideas and early designs here, but this is a friendly contest, so no stealing ideas. I want all the entries to be as unique and creative as possible.

Is there a rule about how much of the skin we have to do? I dont know about everyone else, but (for the most part) I never really get past the three main windows.

The three main windows are the absolute minimum, but complete skins will likely get better scores.

What about inverted colors? What does that have to do with anything? For this contest, as long as the end result is black and white, it's fine.

Well Mr Hann, you've piqued my curiosity, so I think I'm in, started to toss around a few ideas , if I can get what I'm looking at to fit into the classic windows I'm definately doing this.

Just have to find my classic skin templates that I used and see if I can remember how a classic skin hangs together

I havent done skinning since...shit i dunno when, but i havent had a forum post since 03? haha.
Well, this little contest looks like it could be very interesting, especially since we get so much time...aaaand the easy use of colors + MSPaint = shouldnt be bad.

I havent done this stuff in awhile, anything half recent i have done was update old incomplete skins...which are still incomplete and buggy.

Click ME for last touched skin

From the looks of things, this forum does indeed look pretty dead, well i dont want this forum to die, winamp2x skins are still the best, and i wouldnt use anything else.

so yeah, should be an interesting contest, wether or not a lot of people join. I am prolly in.

bye
