i've been thinking.....

that maybe winamp should be merged with something else to rejuvinate it and liven up the forum, do something extreme like change the name, programming... like food products change cartridges to attract more people.

i know, its out of the blue and not practical, but hey, anything to stir a thread right now is good, right?

What Winamp needs to do is a quantum leap like before. We had Winamp 3, skipped 4, and hit 5 like the angry fist of God.

To coincide with the release of Windows 7, we should skip 6 and release a masterstroke--Winamp 7.

A new player for a new era of Windows. There's a lot that could be done there.

^ That's a good idea(for those who can do something other than post pictures of Widdys) I did like it when we could discuss movies and maybe music in GD. Just my two cents.

I don't think they meant merging the inactive music and movie/tv forums with gd (which wouldn't help much anyway, most of the people who'd talk about music moved on long ago).

I have no right to say this since I have no knowledge or skills on how to fix it.

Winamp has been my favorite player mostly because of AVS. Milkdrop always came second, because I can't render pictures or text nearly as well.

AVS is a royal pain in the ass for Vista Home Premium x64 (probably other versions of Vista too), and with my favorite part of winamp gone, it's less attractive. It won't stay in fullscreen, crashes a lot, won't allow desktop background anymore, etc.

Winamp's interchangeable and resizeable/reshapable components have been nice too, which is why I still use it, but without stable AVS on my primary operating system, it's nowhere near as attractive as it used to be.

As far as the forums, I don't really worry so much. There's still enough content to read and type about here for me.

You can't blame winamp for MS releasing a piece of software that isn't compatible with tons of software.

Yeah, I know they didn't mean merge different aspects of Winamp per se, but I still liked the movie discussions and other things right in GD. It's me, what the hell do I know.

Dear Widdy,

If you want it, just do it. I like to see any mod try say something about it.

(And that, folks, would really be entertainment. )

He doesn't even use fb2k's library feature. He loaded his entire collection into one playlist. Foobar has a library feature and it also displays album art. That guy is an idiot.

I don't mind the canned meat, but why should I buy anything from those online Canadian *******ies, when I can just go to the corner and buy all the prescription drugs I need at a real Canadian *******y.

I'd rather see it "unmerged" with most of the stuff it has. Maybe then I could use it without it crashing all over the place.

^Kind of funny how they had to make a predixis removal tool as part of the "winamp essentials" pack.

Indeed. But somehow the majority of the people want a single tool that will play their music, movies, rip vinyls, do their laundry and walk the dog 4 times a day... Without changing those scary options or just want to frantically click on every [OK] or [Next >] button they see

youre right, but that wasn't the subtext i was trying to make, i know that each time someone tried to make an "all in one" player (or software in general), it ends up being too bulky and somewhat unusable... (look at WiMP and itunes and realplayer),

i was thinking more to the lines of... ummm... i dont know... merge it with nero? or maybe talk to, like... Creative Labs or something for a partnership to bundle winamp with their mp3 players, ok... supposedly AOL does this, i realise it would make the players a bit more expensive due to disc manufacturing and extra costs, but maybe in the long run.. people who still dont know what winamp is or are still using [insert player here], can try it.

and yes, i know winamp is not sold in forced marketing, but its just an idea, probably too ambiguos (sp?), but worth a shot

I'd like that too, but it would be enough not to let out an expletive ....from it not being able to get through an album of MP3 files without visiting the task manager to kill a crash. I could also skip the necessary periodic re-install that comes from it just completely hemorrhaging.

Winamp is hardly unique. It's really hard to find a truly happy media player of any kind on windows. Linux has great stable ones, but that isn't exactly convenient.

Software is rarely unique. If I have enough money and time I can pay someone in India to make a program to mimic anything. Winamp got a jump and led the charge on the mp3 revolution, now mp3 players are a dime a dozen and they mostly have the same basic features. What I feel will set others apart in today's environment is the exclusive content a certain media player can access, and with a parent company of TW (a huge media company) I hope they can capitalize on this but I'm not sure they figured that out yet.

It seems some features are pretty rare among current software. Namely the features called stability and low resource usage.

I guess the problem for me isn't so much my wanting Winamp to move forward with new stuff, but just to remain as stable as it once was for the basic features I use such as playing music, organizing with the ML, and AVS. If that could all happen on whatever OS is current at a given time, I'd be happy for life.

I'm still a rather faithful user, but disappointed when it can't do what it once did for me.
