What are gen.bmp and genex.bmp for? I'm working on completing one, and I don't know how to test them.

/edit - Also, what are the cloud-like things at the bottom of gen.bmp? Letters?

Gen and genex are used by the Media Library, primarily. And yeah, those are letters. (Cloud-like? How so?) They appear in the titlebar. In the media library they spell out Winamp Library but apparently Winamp will use gen and genex for other plugins as well, and will use the letters to accurately title them.

Yeah, I followed Wally's link to the gen file, and saw what they were supposed to look like. I think that my file was corrupt there or something, but I fixed it.

Here are the gen.bmp and genex.bmp for 2Fast 2Furious (it already had video.bmp )

No screenshot available right now, Something is messed with my ML, its way too big so I can't even resize it. I hope its good, if someone can tell me how to reset the size, than I'll put up a screenshot.

Bizzare!!! Just 2 days ago, after seeing Luigi update all those skins, I wondered whether I'd want to update some old classics as well. So the first thing I did was.........locate my copy of Act 2 Finale and have a look at how I might make the new windows!

Act 2 Finale was the first winamp skin that I really liked, and I regarded it as the benchmark of skinning for ages. I think I decided that I wouldn't update it after all, because I don't have the time, but after this, I may change my mind. If no one else does it, I'd also have a go at Liquid Paradise - it would be a pleasure to update that skin, as it's never ceased to be one of my all-time favourites.

That will work if you want to replace that with the one I made. And why is the blue so important?

Explained in this post:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....408#post998408

Basically, it only applies to the genex.bmp, but it don't hurt to keep the rest constant also.

So don't mess with the size, background color and don't forget the extra 4 pixels.

One more thing, don't forget that little unknown square in the gen.bmp, if you don't skin it, it buggers up the skin on the plugins that use that bmp

You can just copy a 7x7 square from 112,59 of the same bmp, and you'll be ok.

Unusuable, can't see the text.

If you think you are good enough to update a skin, you have to do it right. No use posting stuff that does not measure up.

I didn't think so either, but I didn't know how else to tie them in tot he rest of the skin. If anyone has any other ideas, feel free to try it, cause I'm pretty much stumped. The big ones look ok imho, but the small verticle ones look like crap.

You might still be able to use that design... try using the same bg yellow for the scrollbars instead of the gray. I notice you have the slider stop short of the edges, if it goes all the way it might not look as weird... and maybe move the vertical ones all the way to the right of the possible area. I don't know if any of that will work or not, but it might.

Thse files are complete unusuable. Let's stick to the major skins and let these lesser ones die with dignity, right?

I do want to see your portfolio, I have my doubts you have any published skins yourself.

Eh, sorry to break your bubble, but I just went through what you posted in the skin creation department, and your credentials are just not there.

You have absolutly no experience making a skin, not a classic skin, not a modern skin. You have started a few, but you have not completed them. No, you are not updating other peoples skins. You just don't have the experience.

What I would suggest for you is to get a skin generator, yes, a skin generator. Crank out one of those skins, open the file and start messing around with it. Learn where everything is, and why.

The gen.bmp's you posted in this thread are seriously out of wack, because you put things at different coordinates from where they should be, and as a result things look like crap.

Before you touch anybodies skin, you have to learn how to make one yourself.

Fine than, do you honestly think I care what you think? Okay, maybe I don't have experience, but I thought I would try to help out a little. Apparently it was a waste of my time. I like helping people, but from these forums (not just classic skins in general, but all of the winamp forums), that maybe thats not such a good idea. Apparently people just don't need/want my help with anything.

As for not finishing any skins, its not for lack of skills, or lack of trying. Its just that I have run out of inspiration. I started on one today that I thought might be good, than I came in and read your post, and for some reason, just decided that I wouldn't, because its not a major 5-star creation, it probably wouldn't be worth anyones time.

I guess skinning is just not worth my time. I only came to this part of the forums because I was interested in skinning, but I guess I'm just not good enough.

I'll be back in GD if anyone needs me (which is unlikely).

You're going about this the wrong way; skinning is supposed to be fun. If it's not fun, don't do it, but if it is fun, then keep at it. Wally's being a bit condescending, but his advice is good. Finish a few skins of your own. don't let his post talk you out of doing just that. The only way to become experienced it ... through experience. I'm sorry you're offended (I would be too, I totally understand that) but I honestly wouldn't have touched Steve Moss's skins if I hadn't been doing this for years.
But it's up to you, if you don't enjoy it, don't bother, but don't let the idea that you aren't good enough stop you from making your own skins.

There's so many that need updated...

Creative PC-DVD, Energy Amplifier, Jenny McCarthy Shower, Megaman, Metrix Metal Dream series, Mountain Dew, Pac-Man, Sharp Green, Tech-Amp, etc... and that's just a few... too bad I can't skin.

Oh well... hopefully someone will complete most of the good ones.

You'd have to be more specific on the Megaman and Pac Man skins, there are several. I know at least one Pac-Man skin is up-to-date.
I'd do more, but I wore myself out already. I would like to do Energy Amp eventually, if nobody else does it.

This is not the time for fragile egos, wounded pride or other *sniff sniff*s. Don't act like someone's slapped you in the face, because nobody has. The fact is that making the extra windows is a very precise job, because it needs to be done with utmost respect to the original author, and therefore needs to be done in a way that is as transparent as possible - so it needs to be done by someone who knows the ins and outs of skins like the back of their hand.

All it would have taken for you to not get so offended would've been a little humility and a realistic self-assessment of your current skinning knowledge.

Listen to luigihan. I started out trying to update Major Tom ages ago, but I got in above my head and let Luigi take it over. This isn't about pride or anything, it's about keeping the good skins around. I couldn't do Major Tom, so I tried Auriga, and eevn then I had difficulties, so I asked here.

And the other Pac-Amp or Pacamp (not sure of its exact spelling) seems to already be gone.

There seems to be a little glitch in the pressed states of the video buttons, although I don't know if that just came from the original minibrowser, but it seems like something easily fixable with a little copy and paste. Other than that nice skin and good job updating.
