keeps lowering its own volume?

I can't figure out why this is happening, but im close to just abandoning Winamp.

for some reason it keeps lowering its own volume. it happens randomly but often if not every day. I always notice the volume of my songs is lower than the rest of the sounds on my computer, so i check the volume control, and sure its always lower than the rest

I just wiped my system the other day, reformatted, and reinstalled everything, and its still doing it.

does anyone have any ideas?

Hi muggerfugger,

You probably need to disable the mouse wheel volume control option (if you have a plugin that enables that feature). It's easy to accidentally change the volume when using the mouse wheel to scroll within Winamp when this feature is enabled. You should also check ALL the main and plugin configuration options looking for those related to dynamic volume control. Not knowing your configuration, I can't suggest specific places to check.

There is also an option (you should look at) in the Windows sound control dialog that can be used to dynamically change the volume of apps.

Good luck.

firstly, a plug-ins list (as from http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....161361#plugins) is required since it could be a plug-in conflict (and is best to post that even if it's just to rule out that being the case).

secondly, it could be something external of Winamp like something from the soundcard drivers / related utilities which they install which could be causing it - which sounds very much like the issue which was posted and solved in http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=339872

I didn't mention any info on plugins because i don't use any BUT the last.fm scrobbler thing. Which just uploads the titles of the songs i listen to.

Everything else is default.

But if its required here:

Listing of installed input plug-ins (in_*) and the relevent apis which they indicate that they
support to allow you to see how well the plug-in is likely to work with different Winamp builds.

Note: This is a best guess at how well the plug-ins shown should work with Winamp and until
you actually use the plug-ins with Winamp in normal use you will not otherwise know.

A * means the plug-in has support for metadata queries on a file (2.9+)
A # means the plug-in supports saving modified metadata via Winamp apis (2.9+)

Summary:

'One for Nunz' found 16 installed input plug-ins in 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp\Plugins'
93% (15) of the plug-ins installed provide the needed 5.x api ("winampGetExtendedFileInfo(..)
or winampGetExtendedFileInfoW(..)") to allow the formats provided by the plug-ins to work with
most of Winamp 5.x's features (more important with higher versions).

Unicode Taskbar Compatibility Listing

The plug-ins listed below show references to the SetWindowLongA(..) OS api. If this api is used to
subclass Winamp's main window, it can cause Winamp's display of unicode text in the taskbar to fail.
For a plug-in to be compatible it needs to use the unicode version of the api - SetWindowLongW(..).

Being listed here does not mean a plug-in will cause the issue as there are legitimate reasons for
a plug-in to be using SetWindowLongA(..) but it is a good indicator for people who know which ones
are compatible to route out plug-ins which are likely to be causing the issue. Only those plug-ins
which do not also show references to the SetWindowLongW(..) OS api have been included in this list.

If you do experience the issue then there is a way to fix the plug-in(s) if the original author is
no longer supporting or around to fix the plug-in(s) to use SetWindowLongW(..) for the subclassing
by installing the Unicode Taskbar Fix from http://nunzioweb.com/daz/unicodetaskbarfix/index.html

The scroll wheel adjustment seems to only affect Winamp itself, but winamp's volume in the Windows Volume Mixer. When i change it it stays the same in the volume mixer.

The setting the Windows Audio/Sound Device properties is "loudness equalization", which isn't enabled either.

I'll look into that other plugin. Nothing on my machine does this but winamp, so i dunno :|

Would suck to go back to using WMP but i never had this problem with it.

I'll keep investigating. thanks for the replies so far.

Hi muggerfugger,

I was referring to the options on the 'Communications' tab of the Windows sound control panel from the Windows Control Panel. However, I doubt they are causing your problem since only Winamp is affected.

Have you checked the volume configuration options in the DirectSound output plugin?

i think i figured out my problem.

i was playing music shuffling through my library. All of a sudden a MIDI file started to play, so i hit next song, and i noticed the audio was much lower.

So i guess its the midi files that have been doing this.
i googled and found this topic
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=320434
so im gonna try that and see if it solves my problem

Winamp > Prefs (Ctrl+P) > Plugins > Input > in_midi > config > Device tab

If it still happens after changing "Device" to "DirectMusic / MS Synthesizer (with output)"

Then change 'Volume Control' to 'None'.

Although I don't have many midi files, I personally keep 'Autodetect' selected for 'Volume Control',
along with the Device set as above,
and select 'GM (General MIDI)' next to 'Additional reset commands between tracks'
and checkmark 'Keep DM port active between tracks' under the DirectMusic tab,
and I don't have the problem.

But yeah, if you do have the problem (at a guess, it's soundcard/driver related), then just disable Volume Control for MIDI...

This happens to me sometimes, only on windows 7 machines. I noticed my winamp volume kept lowering to almost nothing, and watched it happen when someone messaged me on Steam. I disabled the IM noise on steam, and the volume stays the same now. Beyond this, I'm not sure why it does it, but I bet the answer lies in Windows 7 sound settings somewhere.

@agentmith

That could be something else....

Windows 7 Control Panel > Sound > Communications tab:
Setting: When Windows detects communication activity...
Change it to "Do nothing" instead of "Reduce volume of other sounds by 50% / 80%"
