Fraunhofer or not?

I am interested in encoding my CD collection to MP3 format, and want to use the Fraunhofer Codec (not LAME). Can anyone please confirm which library and version the MP3 encoder in WinAmp Pro v5.x is based on?

Advance apologies if this is a FAQ. The Search function does not work for me, and the Greatest Hits do not seem to answer it either.

TIA for any help

Stig

why?

note: winamp can use any version of lame, you just have to manually replace lame_enc.dll

Fraunhofer is the Windows installed mp3 system codec and is what Winamp uses if you choose diskwriter output/'convert to format'.

In ripping prefs set Encoding Format to .WAV.
In .WAV output options untick 'Write .WAV header.
Set 'Convert to format' and select an output format from the system codecs ( the [...] button)
Set the output extention type.

The FH codec comes in two flavours, pro and advanced.

The advanced codec is installed with WMP versions <10, The professional version of the codec is installed with WMP 10.
The professional version can also be found on the web under the name 'Radium'

The advanced version is for low birates only and hopelessly outdated now.
The Professional version is just OK.

Neither is very close to the quality that can be achieved with Lame.
