Need procedures on converting files to FLAC and Back to Wave or WMA

I recently purchased Winamp 5.52 Pro and I'm learning how to use the software. I can ripped from cd to wma format for use on my cell phone with no problem, but I tried to convert wave files to FLAC and I'm not sure if I did it right. I have Flac files saved on my drive but since I'm not familier with this file type I'm not sure of what to expect. I'm told that FLAC files are a good way of archiving music files. When saved in this format, can one still listen to the files? I tried clicking on the files and they do not play back. Do I need to set up Winamp to play FLAC files? And what about decoding FLAC FILES BACK TO WAVE OR WMA FORMAT?

I originally highlighed wave files in Media library, right click on mouse, send to Format Converter and change where I wanted the files to go, etc.

Please let me know the correct procedures.
