Been a while...

So I'm not dead. Not yet.

I missed this place, so I thought I should drop in. I've been dealing with some medical problems for the past seven months, and I still haven't gotten it resolved. Not sure what's causing it, but my small intestine gets irritated and generally makes my life miserable every week or two. I've made some major lifestyle changes since this started back in April. I've given up pretty much all beef and pork products. I've completely stopped drinking carbonated drinks. I've seriously cut back on my intake of high-fructose corn syrup from other sources. I'm afraid to try eating anything with ingredients that are hard to digest (nuts, seeds, most vegetables, etc), and I get almost all of my fruit/vegetable intake from drinking V8 Fusion (I really like the tropical orange flavor, but this stuff is expensive). I've completely given up smoking (not easy after doing it for ten years).

In the process, I've managed to rack up somewhere around $55,000 worth of medical bills. I've also lost about 40 pounds. None of my clothes fit right anymore, and I've had to poke four new holes on the inside of my belt just to keep my pants on. I'm not going to be able to go to a specialist until I can get insurance again (enrollment comes around in January) because no one will see me without cash up front. It's obvious that my money is more important than my health. So I've just been toughing it out, missing a few days of work here and there while I'm hunched over in the bathroom, and trying not to eat anything that will make my digestive system explode.

On a brighter note, I now have a 2-disc set of My Colon's Greatest Hits provided by the radiology department of the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital. I'll post a few pictures when I get some more free time. I'll try not to get dead between now and then.

Sorry to hear about your health problem.

Sure sounds to me that health care for everybody as Obama had in mind is still far away.
one of the benefits of living were i am , at least that is take care of.

sounds a bit like the problem my wife had in the past.
We spend many hours in hospitals to find out in the end that her colon's decided to live their own lives.
They over reacted on fat food.
we have been on a non fat diet since 1996 and everytime we grab fast food or don't have a decent meal it shows instantly.

First, thank you all for the well wishes and kind words. I really appreciate it, and I'm sorry I haven't been around the forums.

Now, I finally figured out what's wrong with me...

Nothing ever showed up in any of the radiology I've been through, and last week, they brought in a surgeon to open me up and find out. I had a tumor in/on my small intestine. The doc removed over 12 inches of my intestine just to be sure it's all out, and I've currently got 17 metal staples holding me together.

I'm able to walk and do light things, but it'll be almost 2 more weeks before I can drive, and 4 to 6 weeks before I can go back to work. Yay for no income! I'm just happy that I'll be able to eat normally again soon.

I can't sit in one position for too long right now, so I'll drop in and catch up on the forums some more in the next few days.

With less intestine to absorb nutrients, you might want to consider a protein/vitamin shake to go with your meals.

Wow. Should I feel guilty for laughing at this? Good to see you (Sarge and Chev both) back. Actually, my digestion has pretty much gotten back to normal already. The surgeon removed my staples and ok'd me to eat fiber and roughage last week, so things are getting better.

I still have to wait another 2 weeks until I can go back to work, though. I'm fighting to get into the cancer center, too... The oncologist that saw me after the surgery wants me to go to MD Anderson Cancer Center to get a PET scan and get started on a chemotherapy regimen, but my insurance is turning it into a nightmare. Been playing phone tag with my primary doctor, specialists, and the cancer center for about 2 weeks now trying to get things set up. Ugh.
