Ouch, I was so hoping for a linux port of wasabi.player.

As for off topic. RC10 is out now, so is this thread even needed?

Here's an odd one.........

RC8 was working fine then today if i run it the modern skin flashes up for 1/2 second then disappers. It's running in the task manager but as I have the task bar disabled I can't access it.

I haven't tried a reinstall yet any ideas before I do?

a linux port might still happen, but it will take even longer now..
There's a bit of damage control going on right now, figuring out how to move on from here and get things going again..
We'll see how it goes..
Hopefully, this is not the end..

RC10 has been out for a while and yet this discussion is still here, so?

There is no chance of a Wasabi.player linux port in the near future.

Having a working, legal, wasabi.player build for Windows is enough of a challenge already.

rm-x is the only reason that i still use wasabi.player. some of the buttons just don't work using winamp 2.9x/5.

i do have a concern though. if aol is basically cutting off development of wasabi what does this say about future development of winamp. i don't want winamp's code to be too stagnant and inflexible like the analogy given in a few years.

well, you've seen what they did to Netscape and now you've seen what they did to Wasabi.
They might very well completely destroy Winamp alltogether and fire every Nullsoft employee in just a few years..
It wouldn't surprise me..

They didn't destroy Netscape and I'll be damned if they destroy Wasabi.

I may not be Wasabi's greatest fan, but I can see its potential, and I'm already investing in the fact that it'll reach that.

what I meant about Netscape was that they fired all the Netscape employees, tho Netscape was more or less already doomed before that.
But that's beside the point really..

We've seem what they can do, again and again..
They make retarded decisions all the time which eventually lead to the destruction of some good software.

/me fears what they may do to Wasabi, Winamp and ICQ

Firebird lives on, and Wasabi may yet as well. *crosses fingers*

I'm curious, though, as to why the code in Wasabi could not be legally used on Linux platforms.

There's as much legal code for Linux as there's for Windows, well there's a little more for Windows actually..
The thing is, The same code the Windows version is missing, is also missing for a potential Linux version, so nomatter what you do, you still need that last bit of code and you can't have it legally right now..

yea..

Most of the sourcecode has been open-sourced, but there are still bits of very important code that hasn't been opened-sourced yet and now it might not happen at all if we're truly unlucky..

some of it could, but not the most important parts, that's just way too much work..
Tho if it would come to that, I guess that's what needs to be done.

doh.
true that I wanted Winamp 5 more than Winamp3 but only because Winamp3 was uncooked. When it was finished I would have loved Winamp3 and its component splendedness but it just didnt work out. How much of a blow is this to wasabi.player? Will it recover?

All of the missing code could be re-written from scratch, but we've only just begun evaluating how much that is. It's not a small task.

We are still 100% reliant on Nullsoft to make wasabi.player builds, and while we can rebuild some components of it, we can't repackage it.

I've noticed you (russ) and plague talk about this 'we' thing...
are you part of wasabidev or something?
and what exactly is wasabidev? I've been to the website but I couldn't really find anything about what it actually does.

Very, very sad news about Brennan and Aus..

I just got lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory.

Wasabidev was founded by myself, and consists of whoever wants to help out. Oh, just read the site . It's slightly out of date now.

Brennan was the lead programmer on Winamp3 (Justin originally wrote Winamp).

OK so to clear up any confusion, WA5 should be out sometime in the near future. Soon. Steve says Dec 15 now, haha. But seriously, just a few issues that someone really screwed the pooch on getting done in time, and should be taken care of soon. Brennan and Aus are no longer with us, an they will be missed, but Winamp will be OK. :/
As far as I'm concerned, based on the ways things are/have been going, if anybody ever asks that same annoying and frustrating question that I'm sick and tired of hearing, about WHEN Winamp 5.0 Final will be here, I will always respond by just saying soon and nothing more. Could be after Christmas and possibly after the New Year as far as I'm concerned. I will not take that Dec 15 date seriously, and neither should any of you. Just know that it's coming - that's all. Nothing more.

Don't email or PM me concerning Winamp. Instead, either start a NEW TOPIC or post a REPLY in the appropriate thread in these forums. This will also benefit others who may have a similar question or problem. But before posting, please first Search the forums and read all FAQs and all Sticky threads.

There are already other opensource audio programs like xmms, so maybe some of the missing code can be filled in? I am assuming the missing parts are the core parts, like the decoding and stuff.
