update 5.52 fails and winamp no longer works

I have searched your key words on my problem and havent found any threads on this problem. I only post with the hopes that you guys in tech support will help me before I no longer try to use this service again.

My system info;

Dell XPS 700 DXG061
intel core 2 duo
6300 @ 1.86GHz
1.86 GHz, 1.00GB ram

windows XP
media center edition
version 2002
service pack 2

video; dual nvida GeForce 7900 GS

audio; Creative SB X-Fi

I have finished pulling my hair out and I am only posting here as a last resort before going back to I-tunes, which I DO NOT WANT TO DO.

I have been using winamp with no problems for about a year, and now because of a security update, the entire thing has shut down.
And now because I have uninstalled it and it wont reinstall, I cannot use winamp at all.

I went through all the steps of uninstall/reinstall but everytime it gets to the point of downloading files it stops with the error message.

```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
-You must close Winamp before you can continue-
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
since I know that I have removed all files associated with winamp, I choose to ignore and continue with the install.

Then it imediately stops the download with the error message
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
-error opening file for writing-
C:\Program files\Winamp\winamp.exe
Click abort to stop the installation,Retry to try again, or Ignore to skip this file
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

I have tried all the above options, and the only thing that will work is to ignore the file,then the message
continues to pop up with each additional file to be opened.

I have aborted the install and gone through every location to find any winamp files, and I feel that I have deleted every file associated with it. Including pluggins, which I only had a few visual pluggins.

This is my hijack this file;

I see that winamp is on my Hijack this log, I ran it after the last time I tried to reinstall winamp. It is the only trace of it on my computer.

In Task Manager make sure all instances of winamp.exe and winampa.exe are not running. Completely remove everything in "C:\Program Files\Winamp" or where you have Winamp installed, and remove "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Winamp". Temporarily disable your anti virus software, and then try to re-install.

Espy, I am having the same exact problem and nothing seems to work at all. I took your advice OSUDragon, although there were no running instances of winamp.exe or winampa.exe. I also disabled all of my antivirus software to absolutely no avail. I didn't even really want to upgrade but apparently the old version was a "security risk" and the 5.5 window never went away.

I deleted everything in the \winamp directory (including all of my skins, visualizations etc that I've amassed over the years) but the reinstall still won't work because apparently theres still a running instance of it somewhere. It is getting very frustrating.

Doing this just screwed me big time. I too will probably just go back to iTunes after this if I can't get it installed.

After doing the uninstall and deleting all those files, try running CCleaner (both in the "files" and "registry" mode) and then restarting your computer. Disable your antivirus (kill all the processes if need be) and kill any processes that don't need to be running.

Then try reinstalling it.
