Using the NSV browser plugin for audio only streams
Hi everyone. I've been wondering if it's possible at all to use the NSV browser plugin for streaming MP3-only ShoutCast streams?
I really like the fact that the NSV browser applet installs automatically on both IE and Mozilla/Firebird/Firefox. I would very much like to embed it into my Shoutcast station's website, but I haven't found anything that hints at the applet being able to play simple MP3 streams. (And yes, I'm aware of the fact that you can embed RealPlayer/WMP/Quicktime. It's the NSV thingy I'm interested in, because it's seksie. :b) Anyone? |

Nope, I tried, doesn't work.
www.freedomaudio.com is good, but requires java and only works on windows. Matt... Star104 Internet Radio http://www.star104.net Oldies104 Celebrating 14 years on the air! (Does anyone remember OldiesRadioNET.com?) |

That's a shame. Earth to Nullsoft: making the NSV control work with MP3-only Shoutcast streams with no video would be very nice. I'm sure it would make a lot of people happy. Do it! Do it now!
![]() The NSV browser control is awesome since it auto-installs on IE and Mozilla/Firefox. It would be absolutely perfect for MP3 Shoutcast station websites. |

Well, while it can't play normal mp3 shoutcast streams, it can play audio only streams. I just tested it on a .nsa file and it indeed works, and with full AAC glory (MP3 also works)
If you set up a stream to run with No Video codec selected, you can connect to it with this, and get an audio only stream. |

You need to access to an encoder (not sure if there are linux ones). Just change the encoding settings to AAC for audio and No Video for video. Then you can use whatever the linux alternative to nsvscsrc is to serve it.
I haven't tried, but it should work with NSVCAP as well. |

That sounds like it will break things like Shoutcast relay servers and probably also the shoutcast.com listing... any comments?

It would be listed as Internet TV and not Radio if you made it public (you don't have to make it public). Also, NSV relays still don't work with NSV (unless you hack the EXE).

Sawg, has anyone successfully hacked the exe to allow for this?

I have, though I really haven't tested it too much.
I have sucessfully locally relayed a local stream. ![]() Still need to test it with the actual YP listings. |

I'm not sure if this against the rules or anything, but can you post the hack or tell how you did it. If it's against the rules, PMing is always available

Thanks for all the comments and ideas, but the voices in my head are telling me that it'd be a much cleaner solution to just let the NSV control support standard ICY MP3 streams as well. *sniff*

Tell the voices in your head to go to

I've used FreedomAudio before. I like the NSV browser control because, I know you've seen it coming, it doesn't require Java.
Not a lot of people have an installed JRE these days. |

Activex is not universal, java is and is not platform dependent.
The world does not revolve around Micro$oft alone. ( Thank god ) Scenic Television is your ambient window to the world - - Television.ScenicRadio.com |

The NSV control auto-installs on IE and Mozilla/Firebird Windows. That covers roughly 99.9% of the people who'd *want* to use an embedded control. The Linux types will be smart enough to just pass the feed URL to their XMMS.
Please stick to the topic. |
