WombatShare still compiles under linux and I've writen a test linux server, however XMMS doesn't really have an equivalent of Winamp's Media library, I've looked at various plugins that claim to provide this functionality, but none seem to If you know of any I'd love to integrate it, or even better if you have the neccessary skills I'd be delighted to help you create a plugin for it

In summary, there is *no* technical reason why it won't work! Its more a practical one of how it would work!

I'd only be interested in streaming music off of my Windows machine to my Linux machine so would XMMS still need a media library for this purpose? I don't have another Windows machine on my network so I'm not quite sure how the plugin works.

Technically thats already possible, but it wouldn't be very nice, you'd have to construct apparently random urls of a form along the lines of :
http://192.168.1.3:9005/fetch?fn=WgNt3886GYIyA.mp3
This would normally be done for you as you'd see what you were selecting in the form 'artist - title'

ml_www could work for you, you should be able to list all the tracks in a browser window and select them off there, this may work a lot better for you In the long run I'd like to integrate wombatshare into xmms, but I need to know how to do this

Thanks. I've actually used ml_www but was just wondering if your plugin would actually be better since it seems to be more specific for in network use.

IT *would* be better if I'd found a nice way to integrate it into xmms Any ideas from an xmms user greatly received There's a wiki on the site for proposing suggestions and things

javajunky what about letting the user specify a directory where it would search for the mp3's and ading a simple window with a search box and a way to view all files shared by the xmms and the other players on the net, to identify each one you could add a small * before or something similar.

@dextro hmmm that could work, unfortunately its too late in the day for me to do this tonight, and I'm out tomorrow night, but I might be able to fit it in, later in the week, what linux/gcc etc you using Anony1 and would you be willing to test it for me please ?

I've *almost* finished the standalone Windows server, and although biased, I quite like it, sits in the system tray, has its own tag-scanner (id3lib and vorbislib)

Also there's now a configuration option to 'discard' duplicate results from the network, although this means results coome back much more slowly. The protocol's pretty robust now though, It's not crashed on me in several months of continuous use

I just got a new PC and I'll set it up with the old on as a network, I'll be able to use this plugin then so I am very happy that it's coming out this great.

I can't wait to get to the University HE HE (onle 1 year to go for me )

I would be willing to test it although I'm not sure if I'm the best person to be doing it. I'm a Linux noob and my network isn't quite as reliable as I'd like it to be yet. Sometimes I'm able to see my Windows machine while other times I am not for no apparent reason. I'm using Suse 9.1.

@dextro, which plugin ? The standalone server or xmms thingy ?

@anony1, Hmm, by 'seeing' Windows machine do you mean via Samba or see its IP ? [are both machines configured as DHCP servers or anything ?]

Another reason why your plugin might be more useful. I can't enqueue songs using the ml_www plugin. I have to pick the song I want to hear right after each song stops playing.

Anony1 I don't know if you can do that in XMMS since I only used it once or twice but in Winamp you can alter the default behaviour to enqueue songs when recieved from the OS and that would take care of your problem.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check it out in XMMS later. Where is this option in Winamp? Is it the library options "Enqueue the selected items" instead of "Play selected items" on double click in the media library?

No it's "enqueue files on double-click on Windows Explorer" under File Types in Winamp.

I didn't say the winamp name because you wont find anything just like it in XMMS (since it's not windows explorer LOL )

You would also be able to use the standalone server too, there would be no need for samba

@anony1: This task is surprisingly painful I've so far had to re-compiled XMMS, re-compiler my compiler (twice) and now I can't get the zLib library I use to compile into my codebase anymore , and I have no idea why ... But I'm working on it!

Wow sounds like a real pain to implement this into XMMS. I can't speak for all Linux users but I would be perfectly happy with just using the standalone server. Thanks for your hard work btw.

The standalone server isn't much user for listening to music with though You really need players for linux <g>... Unfortunately the compilation issue I'm seeing is in the core library so I can't get anything to cmpile now Its something to do with zlib's header files not being compatible with G++ , but my library requiring being compiled under g++ ..or something

Brand new version of the WombatShare protocol up on the site. New plugins for winamp, a new Standalone Server and a couple of new features. The main new feature are hot-key support in the ML viewer, such as SHIFT+ENTER, and the ability to filter out duplicate media tracks when fetching from remote nodes.

The latest version can be found at http://www.wombatinvasion.com/pmwiki...loads/HomePage

javajunky I know this may sound a bit odd but is there any chance we can see a symbian/s60 version of this plugin?

I would love to be able to use my n-gage arround my house to listen to the mp3s stored in my pc via bluetooth

Only if someone writes it Ironically I've just moved jobs from a company that specialised in S60, but unfortunately I never really did any S60 work, so I don't know the ins + outs too well, I believe it would be possible to do though

I don't have the tools (visual studio) to even give it a shoot otherwise I would

Oh well, let us hope someone writes something like that, I don't have much space in my multimedia card for my songs (ok ok too many games )

You don't actually need Visual C++ to compile s60 programs, its uses a modified GNU compiler, you can download it from the nokia forums.

The c++ compiler and associated tools and libraries etc are actually available for free from Microsoft. Just the IDE (Visual studio) isn't.

hmm....

http://www.google.com/search?query=microsoft+compiler

You will most likely want the platform SDK as well, which includes all the headers and .libs for all the libraries. If you are new to programming though, it is probably the most difficult route to learn :P Although in theory you can build and develop programs just the same as with VS, but it just requires you know what your doing a bit more.

Nothing to add except that I'm glad to see this is still developing. I'm going back to school in a week so hopefully plenty of other people will be using this as well. I can also play around and try to figure out that random Internet2 connection also

I know people have been using it over 'Internet2' which is a little worrying as I didn't design it to scale to those sort of levels, but if need be I can always fix it

Eh?

Ok. This is a nice plugin but I have a fiew issues with it.

Why not make it baised on the daapd protocall thats already out there and use the opensource protocall 'Zeroconfig'?

I really would like to be able to share the music on my mac's with my pc.

It just seams odd that someone would make from scratch two completely new protocalls not compatable with anything else when 2 other protocalls that do EXACTLY the same thing already exist.

I read your FAQ and I understand that this can be porte dto other platforms but who is going to spend the time porting it to OS X when iTunes ALREADY has a protocall built in that does this exact same thing?

Is the reason for this because its t3h 3v1l mac?

Im sorry but this just makes no sense at all to me.

neocrisis the wombat share projct is mainly about the protocole and It's platform independent if I'm not mistaken.

So I believe you just need someone to grab the code and prepare some app or plugin for the mac to enable you to do what you want.

The reason is quite simple, originally I intended to use daap and zeroconfig, however I couldn't find an implementation of zeroconfig that would run integrated into a winamp plugin, all the Open source solutions around at the time I was initially developing the plugin required a seperate service to be run (which meant a complicated install, which I didn't want).

DAAP was not in existence at the time I first wrote WombatShare, its powerful, but comparitively slow to the method I use. Which is basic but extremely fast.

I hope this helps a bit. The code is fully open-sourced, I'd love someone to port it to the MAC, unfortunately I don't have a Mac to test with

So I can't really download songs... I want to share my music and give and take files with my roommate. We have a LAN, it's at MSU, but the download option is inactive.

What's the deal?
