It will be. My current gig is a guidance counselor for 6th-8th grade (ages 11-14) and it's amazing just how much they go through during that relatively short time.

Your pictures made my day. I really loved looking through them, seeing a beautiful selection of some of the world's greatest works of human creativity, and even better, some WinAMP forum members showing just how valuable a family vacation can be. All three of you look really good. I hope that I someday have what it takes to do what you did for your family.

Only one of the vids worked for me (the one that opened in Quicktime). The ones that tried to open in VLC didn't work for me. All the pictures worked fine.

I dunno man. I would just get a Asus RT-N16 router or similar and flash it dd-wrt with proftpd.

Plug a usb stick or an external drive in it. No noise. Takes up no room. Pulls 4 watts not 100. No delay for "wake on lan" because it doesn't sleep.

These routers have a 350 Mhz Broadcom ARM processor. It's not gonna handle php or databases, but static files are not a problem.

This is how I replaced my 35 lb watt waster.

You may find another use for the machine which the router wouldn't handle. One thing that you might find nice if you're going to run a server box is squid. It is nice to have a squid proxy between you and the internet. It makes browsing noticeably smoother.

Stanton SC System 1: SCS.1D motorized DJ controller + SCS.1M mixer
Usually costs $700 for the setup ($1100 new); I managed to snag them for ~$500 total!

I'm so happy I can finally afford my dream setup. This was a massive upgrade from the $70 happy meal toy I've been mixing with for the past 2½ years. Now all I need is a PA system, second deck (though the one can toggle through 4 turntables with a button), and dedicated PC and I can consider myself a real DJ!

This is a sig of some nature.

I bought a toy helicopter. One of the rotor blades is broken length-wise. Can't see it in the picture. Fun little toy. Stupid place doesn't have any replacement blades for it right now.

August of '07? Not bad I guess for boots if they were worn often. My day-job shoes tend to last a bit longer, but I don't wear any one pair more than twice a week. My "work" boots (steel-toe/shank outside stuff) rarely make it through a third year.

Were they the same boots this time? I'm not sure because the post doesn't specify anymore - perhaps a picture link went dead.

I'm on this "made in USA" kick and will likely buy from this list next time I need good boots.

On the chopper - superglue? You may have to put a little on the non-broken side for balance though if you try it.

Isn't strong enough. I'm using some clear scotch tape now. It seems to be working well enough. I thought about the weight too but it doesn't seem to be enough to throw it off.

Shame I didn't check back in this thread since my previous post, until now. I ended up finding a Windows program to make the slideshow for me – the URL now goes to a slideshow: http://www.hughhh.com/hosted/europe

I also emailed you a link to the London Eye photo; let me know if you didn't get it.

The AVIs work in VLC 1.0.0 – you may need to "Repair" them if prompted. Otherwise they should work fine.

As the URL now automatically shows the slideshow, here are the vid links:

MVI_0218.MOV (45.23Mb)
MVI_0310.AVI (70.86Mb)
MVI_0519.AVI (41.16Mb)
MVI_0542.AVI (67.28Mb)
MVI_0777.AVI (33.61Mb)
MVI_0821.AVI (33.32Mb)

The picture on Caterpillar's shop site look the same, but I think they started calling those boots something else.

And by "worn often", they are my only pair of shoes. So yeah, 5 years is good.

I "bought" both of these on someone's corporate card, shortly before we were all made redundant last month:

Blundstone Xfoot 142 Safety Boots ▲ and ▼ Mongrel SP Sport 380080 Black/Grey Hiker Boots

Surprisingly, the latter are not very comfortable for extended walking.

I hate suede on the outside of a sneaker or boot. Looks like shit in 2 weeks. A good pair of Redwings...

10 years. Worth a new sole when you walk through it. I have a pair of this boot from 98. It's on it's third sole. I do use boot grease copiously.

I have a pair of Timberland shoes that I've just worn out. It did take 5 years. They aren't as good as RedWings, but I'd have to say they were worth the $60 I shelled out. I could have new soles put on them, but it's dicey as to whether that's really worth it. I'd have to say it's a decent brand.

I should mention here that the suede pair was not selected by me: when the guys said they were going to buy boots, I shouted after them, "size 9.5 please!" That's what they came back with, and I wasn't about to look that particular gift horse in the maw.

I like the Timberlands because of the lightweight soles(there was a time I wore nothing but Desert Boots). I've never liked heavy boots.
Worst of the lot were Toe-tectors with the full chemical sole we had to wear on most building sites, like walking around in flippers. I'm sure they caused more accidents than they saved.

Do you get work (or intend to do so) as a DJ? If not, that's quite a bit of money to spend on a hobby.

I like the idea of being a DJ as a job. If you do it already, does it pay well? Good hours? Easy money? Free booze? Etc.

Meh, it's not a fun life, Jaz. Unless you can make it to a "superstar" dj level ... but then you will always travel and never be at home.

You will turn down the free booze because both you and others will learn you can't beat match if you are drunk. Though it is offered.

Easy money; pay well? Yes; and yes. It just does not get any easier than playing music for other people and the fact you get paid for it still blows my mind.

The hours suck. Play somewhere between 10 pm and 4 am, sometimes twice a night and sometimes at locations a that are not close together (1-2 hours apart). So, you pretty much sleep all day, play all night, and feel exhausted.

@Psythik: nice setup. That one has gotten good reviews.

I think part of that is no sunlight. It makes me really depressed. I try to get to bed by midnight and get up at 7, especially in the winter. These short days are a killer anyway.

It's why I quit bartending. The work all night, sleep all day gets old.

Just bought this TV bench, and tomorrow I'll venture to Ikea to pick up two of these wall shelves, and one each of these and these bookcases.

We're redoing our main living area. One 40cm-wide bookcase on the left, an 80cm-wide one on the right, spanned by the two wall shelves with the TV bench underneath.

This combo should fit almost perfectly on the 311cm-wide and 212cm-tall wall, with only 1cm to spare in width, and 10cm in height. It should also give us much-needed additional storage for books and Voltron / Masters of the Universe figurines – y'know, the important stuff.

AR-15 stripped lower shipping soon, and rest of the parts on back order. $630 all in all once everything gets in. Beats the hell out of the current panic prices.

I went down to Big 5 looking for a magazine for my 10-22. No dice. Not much in the way of guns either. Yep... people have been shopping. You've got Feinstein and the lot out there trying to shop some more gun control laws.... but err.... I don't see the political will for it.

Gun laws here are strict. Gun laws in the states with the recent slayings were strict. Felon in possession of a firearm will give you 5 years like everywhere.

So where do you go from here? I don't see that anyone is gonna change the US constitution. I sure didn't have any trouble finding pre-ban high capacity magazines when that law was in effect.

My friendly nemesis. My cop neighbor who passed on. He told me one time that he'd never seen such a bunch of clean, never fired weapons as the ones he took off drug dealers. I don't think he was all that happy that possession of weapons added 5 years to a drug bust.... mostly..

In 30 years of being a cop, he never got shot or shot anyone. My cousin Russell is like that too. 25 years being a cop. Never used his gun for anything but target practice. Injured in the line of duty.... he slipped and fell... "Because I tripped over my own fat feet". He lost the bank robber he was chasing... "Then I picked him up .... Get in the car.... the perp was pumping gas at a local service station".

You'd think we lived in a war zone.

Portland Metro gets about 50 murders a year by any means. There are 3.3 million people here. Wanna talk about a non-issue?

My AR is unloaded in the gun safe. If you'd like to stop by for some skulduggery, my baseball bat is loaded. That doesn't seem to have come up either.

Larry (cop who passed on) told me once over a cup of coffee. "I'm fishing, not hunting. Criminals are stupid, or we'd never catch anyone... Hi... guess what? You're under arrest."

Because of brave men like Larry and Russell, we are safer than we've ever been. And I think we can pat ourselves on the back a little too. Americans are a decent lot.

Want my AR? Here.... I really don't give a shit... The only thing it ever killed was some paper targets and beer cans. If you steal it, good luck finding the bolt.

We live in wondrous times. I think my grandkids will cure poverty and want. If they don't get hung up on our bullshit. Want my assault rifles? I could bowl, ski, golf or play pool. It isn't like I'd actually shoot anybody with one of those wicked sum bitches. I just can't think of a situation where I need an AR with a drum mag. I've never even run into a situation I couldn't run away from or punch my way out of. Not one round fired as a civilian.

So.. we have hobbyists against some imaginary perceived threat. I'm just gonna go up to IHOP and get some eggs and a coffee. BB will sit outside, and clean strawberry jam off a kids face or get inverted for a belly rub by Mrs. Cloughessy, who is older than original sin.

Damn. I needed the drum mag for that. It's a commando raid to get a half dozen eggs, over easy, and a couple pieces of toast. I'm even bringing my vicious attack dog with sleigh bells. Oh no! It's a killer.

As is my winter custom, Mrs. Cloughessy found a pile of wood on her porch... which I'd never admit to.

Yep.. we're just a bunch of ripe bastards with an AR and a 120 round drum mag.. civilization may end.

Amplified antenna for the car. Works pretty well so far. I think I'll put some tape on that red light though.

There is no sig.

This afternoon: http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/conf...00C9D3B1K2/8GX

Got to replace my old MB + CPU (AMD Athlon X2 2.7 Ghz - dual core) + 4Gb mem (2 x DDR2 2 Gb) with a 2'nd hand MB + AMD Athlon X4 3.0 Ghz (quad core) and 8 Gb of mem (2 x 4 Gb - new). The "new" and board/stuff I got (was gift) had only 1x2 Gb so I had to replace that with the 2x4Gb listed above.

All is running fine, btw!
