Parodies

I just finished reading Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody, and it was actually quite funny, especially at the end. Are there any parodies that you find particularly funny or clever or do you think they are just a waste of time and written by hacks? Anyway, it's onto Bored of the Rings next for me. Damn those implusing whim buys at the bookstore

I like the parody-songs from Weird Al Yankovic !

They're so cool:

"Smells like Nirvana"
"Oops, I farted again"
"Pretty fly for a rabby"
"Eat it"
"Girls just want to have lunch"
"It's all about the pentiums"
"Polkamon"

...

it's the double standard at play there, as in chinese may call themselves "ch..." though they take offence if non-chinese were to say it, just like black males usually say "ni...." to each other, yet dont mind, unless that person saying it isnt black. thus the link you posted is to a degree acceptable, though i would personally be offended if people started using such lyrics in their signatures, when that person wasnt remotely asian

When everything's said and done, though, you've got to admit, it's riotously funny

Quicktime format, a large download but well worth it - enjoy.

This is an interesting topic. I think context is another thing to consider. I was raised in a very liberal family in a city with a wealth of diversity (New York). As a result, I am a very open-minded individual, and when I joke, for example, "You're such fag," to my friend John, who is gay, he knows who I am and what my beliefs are and the joke I am trying to make, which is way different from four high school football jocks with baseball bats in a dark alley saying the same thing.

Stereotypes are hard things because oftentimes there are many people who fit into stereotypes, but the minute you begin to believe this is representative of an entire culture or what-have-you, you have crossed a line.

Personally, I think humor is a good way to deal with our feelings about stereotypes.

BTW, it's interesting how some stereotypes are considered "acceptable" and others not. How many people reading this post became offended when I implied that high school jocks are homophobes?
