^sounds like good stuff - the food and the ink tank.

"Tickets" for a few Praxis exams (for Renee to add Pennsylvania to the list of states that she holds licensure)... Total $187 We both have to renew our fingerprint criminal background checks too at $40 each for federal and $57 each for state. Then we have to two more other clearances at $15 and $10 for each of us... and that's just for a chance to get an interview for a job. This is getting annoying.

New phone: enV2

I was considering a blackberry, but this was free after rebate and I'm switching providers once I get out of school and off of the family plan anyway.

At that point, I'm definitely getting a smartphone and I'll need an unlimited data plan to go with it.

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

Fisher RS-914a receiver and Fisher STV-758 speakers. $100 for them. Probably too much but whatever. The receiver is pretty cool. Lots of buttons and stuff.

I really need to stop spending all my money on stuff like that. It does explain why I'm always broke.

For Renee

Her current Compaq laptop keeps having problems with the solder joints between the female port for the power cord and the motherboard where it attaches. It takes ~ 3 hours to fix, and even then it's not always successful. I've attempted the fix 3 successful times, and this last 4th time I failed. I got sick of re-doing it all the time, so I just decided to replace it. It was 6 years old and had 2GHz celery for a processor, 30GB hard drive, and although I had upgraded it's ram, it still sucked. I'll use leftover battery power to transfer files then probably shoot it.

This new laptop is rather feature heavy and will be good for her.

I also bought another eSATA cable and an optical audio cable (not for laptop).

More information on the new laptop:

It has really interesting logon security features - First, its 1.3 MP camera can just look at you and log you on based on your facial features. If you don't like that, it has a fingerprint reader that can log you on. Either way is far faster than even the fastest clicking of a username and typing a password. I didn't really need this much security, but I had to take it to get other features I was looking for.

The keyboard includes the number keypad!

It plays blu-rays and burns all types of dvd/cd discs. I don't think it has lightscribe though (I could be wrong about that though).

It has great ins and outs - eSATA for fast read/write with my 1TB external HDD, bluetooth, wireless A, B, G, and N, LAN, faxmodem, infared (which works great with my remote), digital audio outs in addition to the usual analog (or the high-quality Altec Lansing speakers onboard), built in mic in addition to a mic in, 4 USB2's and a 1394 port, S-Video (or RCA with included adaptor), HDMI, and VGA/D outs for video, Express card slot, 8-in-1 card reader, and a duel-scroll touchpad that can double as a backlit media player controller if switched on.

ASUS is very nice to toss in a good sturdy carrying bag with a lot of pockets and a handy USB mouse for good measure.

OS is Vista Home Premium. I still hate Vista for it's annoying, pain-in-the-ass lack of file management/navigation that previous OS's had (drop down menus are worthless, up-a-level button gone on windows explorer, etc.). The eye candy (Aero), Windows Media Center, media editing tools, and burning software are nice though. One major issue though - 4GB RAM and the OS is 32-bit... I can't use all my RAM! How do I upgrade to 64 bit Vista Home Premium without having to buy a new full license?

Processor is Intel's T9400(2.53GHz) with Centrino 2 technology. FSB and RAM speed is 1066MHz. Screen is 15.4" with a resolution of 1440x900. Video card includes NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS with 1024MB dedicated video RAM, which will max out just about any current game. Hard drive is 320GB at only 5400 RPM. I might have to upgrade that - I'd like something faster and with more capacity.

It's warranty will cover my own clumsiness. If I spill on/drop/burn it, they'll replace it during the first year of ownership. There is a limited 2-year warranty for shit that isn't my fault.

Shit man that laptop is better than my desktop almost. Do your self a favor, skip Vista and grab the windows 7 beta 64-bit. Run that until MS kills the beta. Hopefully Windows 7 will be out of beta by then and you can buy it.

Though you are still going to hate Windows 7 for all the reasons you hate Vista ... it's just that 7 is faster. Personally, I dunno what the hell I am going to do with my computer ... I can't stand Windows past Vista for the reasons you stated and I have major hardware incompatibilities with both; hardware that is important to me ... like my midi mixers and dj software. I'm probably going to get a mac actually, at least my stuff is still supported under OS X. It will suck paying Apple's premiums though.

Until then, last bought:

Corsair TX750W 750-Watt Power Supply
XFX GeForce 9800 GT - 512MB GDDR3

Gotta keep a good PC around for gaming anyway

That's an awesome laptop except for a couple of things... The slow HDD, the lack of a 64-bit OS, and I think the LCD resolution could be higher. Other than those, I like it a lot.

Last purchase:

I just took ownership of my new Wells Cargo Mini Wagon. Paid it off in full this afternoon and pulled it off the lot with the title in hand. Pictures to follow.

^now all you need a mattress and a condom dispenser to put into it. And maybe a sound system and some Barry White CDs... or some shag carpet for the ceiling.

Thanks for the compliments on the new gizmo. As far as the shortcomings - The 7 beta idea is a good one. I think I'm going to try it. The resolution is ok for me when it comes to that "small" screen size. If it were any bigger, I'd want higher. Something better would be nice for 1080p videos, but if that's an issue, the desktop has a 27" at 1920x1200.

The hard drive upgrade is an interesting dilemma. I'd like to carry my documents, music, and pictures with me, totaling around 620 gigs. Add movies and that would be around 1.4TB. What's worse is that I can't find any (laptop size) hard drives over 500GB (which are same speed) or ones that have higher capacities than 320GB that have read/write speeds faster than what I already have. Perhaps I just have to fit everything I want most into the current internal and prioritize as much as I can into the 1TB external, which is oddly faster than the internal (it's 7200RPM, 16MB cache eSATA interface... would it be better to boot and run programs from it?).

As far as hardware incompatibilities - I've been using an old Lexmark X83 for color copying/printing, faxing, scanning, etc. up until Vista showed up. Now I have to start the 8-year-old xp computer any time I want to use that machine. It sucks that Lexmark didn't figure out a way to make it Vista compatible. I'd like to buy something newer and better, but after finding out that we'll be losing our jobs, Renee and I have to stop spending now that we have the laptop, so I do all my printing/copying/faxing at work for now until the end of the school year, or until we find replacement jobs.

The other thing I must keep in mind is that although I love messing with it and trying to make it the way I like it, it's mostly for Renee (while I usually do my computer stuff at a desktop).

Don't forget to live before you die.

My new Mini Wagon.

This thing pulls great. I love the TorFlex axle that it's got. Independent wheel suspension makes it pull very smoothly. It's just the right size... when I look in my side mirrors, I can just barely see the edges of its wheel flares, so the trailer tires track in the same paths that my truck's tires do. The all-LED exterior lighting looks SLICK, too. I'll try to get some night pictures of it soon. Unfortunately, shag carpeting wasn't a factory option.
