New mailbox

No, not a new email address. I'm talking about those archaic communication devices that sit out by the side of the road...

Our old mailbox decided to give up yesterday. It was the original one that came with the house, so it had a long and useful life. The baseboard under the box finally rotted enough to break, and when I came home yesterday, I found the box laying on the ground next to the post. So, today, my dad and I put up our new mailbox. This new mailbox has "The Indestructible Mailbox" written on the side of the packaging... and it's pretty accurate. The damn thing is made out of galvanized steel that's almost 3/16" thick. It weighs about fifty pounds just by itself, not including the post we had to get for it. We got the tallest prebuilt 4x4 post we could find, and then we had to create our own mounting hardware since the mount on the mailbox was too big for the post. After we got it mounted to the post (using six 1/4" x 2-1/2" wood screws), I put four nails halfway into the sides of the post near the bottom (where they'd be below the surface after it's put in the ground). The reasons for the nails stuck halfway into the sides of the post is so that they'll protrude into the concrete at the base of the post and keep the post from being able to be pulled straight out of the concrete. Once I got a nail driven halfway into each side of the bottom of the post, we put it in the ground... almost two feet down. Then I mixed up a bag of QuikKrete and poured (more like, packed) it around the base of the post in the ground around those nails. We had to tie the whole thing upright with stakes and ropes to keep it from leaning while the concrete set up. We still have to put our address numbers on it... but I've got pieces of paper with our numbers written on them with black marker taped to each side of the box for tonight. We'll get the numbers on it tomorrow.

Anyways, this mailbox is heavy duty. Just thought I'd share.

Man, what can anyone actually say to this? I'm trying to think of ANY response relevant to what you've just posted but it seems that nothing about mailboxes really interests me.

...sounds like your new mailbox might just outlive your old one . If you somehow manage to hit is with your car, it'l hurt your car more than you'll hurt your mailbox .

You should have mounted it with a thick metal pole.

I was thinking about actually constructing a pole to mount the mailbox to, but it just wasn't cost-effective. That, and we really didn't have time to do it. The one it's on right now is pretty decent. My dad took the guide lines off of it last night before he went to bed, and I checked it again when I got home from work this afternoon. It's solid as hell, so yeah, I think it'll be there for quite a while.

I also stopped by Lowe's this afternoon and picked up some number plates. The plates are black anodized aluminum with embossed reflective numbers. I mounted them vertically on the post just behind the mailbox when I got home today. I think it looks pretty decent.

I'll take a few pictars of it soon. Hopefully tomorrow if I'm not too tired from work.

Surprisingly, people don't really mess with our mailbox too much around here. Once a long time ago, it got egged at Halloween... but that was years ago. Other than that, it just takes normal abuse from the mailman.

I'll get you pictars tomorrow, so long as I'm not dead tired again like earlier today, as long as it's not raining, and as long as I can round up and borrow my dad's camera for a few... Patience is a virtue.

You can test that by throwing a copy of Baldur's Gate 2 at it...

Here's an angled shot from the front-right. Even the flag on this mailbox is heavy-duty. It's made out of steel the same thickness as the box itself, but it's plated with chrome with red paint on the end.

Here's a frontal shot with the door open. It's hard to see, though. Sorry, but I had to resize the picture so that it was small enough to be attached. If you look closely, you can see the hinge that holds the door on. It's stronger than the hinges that hold my bedroom door. Also, you can see the two bolts that hold the handle on the front of the door.

Here's a shot of the base of the post. I used a 40-pound bag of quick-setting concrete mix right there. There's still a thin film that got dried onto the base of the post from where I poured it out of the bucket, but that'll flake off in a few days. It doesn't look like much in this shot, but there's almost two more feet of post with concrete all the way around it from the surface of the ground. This box isn't going anywhere.

In today's times, everything seems to be counted as a weapon of mass destruction, so.. yes. Furthermore, it still is an RPG, isn't it?
