Those 'what is my IP' sites may not display your IP. . . they show what IP the server sees your request from. . . so if you are behind a proxy, you may get incorrect results.

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

1. In windows, click Start -> Run
2. Type "cmd" in the window that appears and click "OK". A DOS prompt should appear.
3. At the DOS prompt, type "ipconfig" and hit return.
4. Your IP Address should be listed.

You can also right click the icon for the connection in the notification area and select "status" then view the "support" tab. The same can be done by right clicking the connection in "Network connections" in the Control Panel or Start menu.

I get this all of the time. Your ISP may do some funky stuff in the background. (I get wrongly banned from all sorts of sites because of some other jerk on my ISP)

A good site will get it right in my case however...

If you want a simple 'what is my ip address' site without tons of ads or other bullshit, just go to http://ipdragon.com

Is there anything valuable about knowing one's ip???
I mean, do you get free beauty samples or sumpin'?

If you wanted to have some sort of server, for people to connect to it you would need to give them the IP for it (or register a domain name, which would also require the IP).

In P2P, particularly bittorrent, finding your IP is useful so that you can tell other peers what IP to connect to (say, if there is some sort of odd proxy configuration set up on the ISP side, sometimes having a client report a specific IP can make things work smoother).

Checking to see what IP address your machine shows can tell you if you are behind a proxy or not (there is at least one site that shows whether or not you are behind a proxy, I can't be bothered to find the address right now).

Also, you can connect directly to a computer to chat with them via a direct connection based chat/messaging client or playing a game.

A few other things I can think of are remote desktop access, shell access (including telnet), controlling programs remotely via some sort of web page interface (utorrent comes to mind), and I am sure there are lots of other possibilities.
