Garbled output with INDEO-encoded videos (AVI)

Yes, it's a risk to post this here, but I know what I'm doing, because just recently I did a fresh install of my OS and avoided at any cost to install too much stuff that may be responsible for the output.

Specs
- Win2K SP 4 ** FRESH INSTALL **
- nForce mainboard @ Win2K reference drivers 4.27
- ALL critical security fixes applied (DCOM, Sasser etc.)
- DirectX 9.0c
- Freshly installed Indeo 5 full package
(including Indeo Video 3.2 support!)

=> There were NO DIVX5 or any other codecs installed yet! <=

After installing the original package, Indeo 3, 4 and 5 AVI videos play perfectly on Media Player 6.4, but not on Winamp. The audio is OK, but the display is all a garbled color mess.

I am not going to install another codec package (yet) because this is the original one shipped by Indeo at the beginning of the millennium, and if Winamp can't be persuaded to work with that, it may be called a bug.

I think that installing DivX 5 might "fix" it, but I also like to see it working with the original driver software by Indeo, as "fixing" it by installing DivX 5 is casting out the demons by the ruler of the demons.

This *must* be reproducible.

Indeo was originally developed by Intel, but was taken over by Ligos a few years ago (v4/v5).

The original Indeo 3.2 codec comes included with Windows (98SE/ME/2k/XP), but Intel no longer supports it.

The latest Indeo package for XP is no longer free:

However, the older/free Ligos Indeo codecs are still usable and I've never had any problems with playback.

What's your video card?
Do you have the latest drivers?
What are your settings in Winamp > Prefs > Video (Advanced section)?

OK, thanks DJ Egg for the quick reply.
Side-note: the links you provided are all pointing to single stuff (i. e. for 3 codec versions you need 3 different install "campaigns"), not the full 5.0 package. Seems I'm right that it's now withdrawn from the net.-

VGA is an ASUS v9520/TD GeForce FX 5200.
Drivers are latest detonators v61.77.

Settings in advanced video options:

[ ] Lock video aspect ratio
[X] Allow hardware video overlay
[X] Allow YV12 overlay mode
[ ] Synchronize video to screen refresh rate

Any suggestions?

(Remember it works in ages-old Media Player 6.4 with no problems

)

OK, it's *definitely* Winamp's fault.
I've just did a clean install of v5.08.
Same thing. (No wonder, as DirectShow Decoder is same version as with previous Winamp versions: 0.93)

To play some of my SVCDs (mpeg2), I've just installed in_mplayer plugin.
Just for testing, I left .AVI in "supported extensions" in in_mplayer options.

And voilà! That video which never worked in Winamp played perfectly in MPlayer.
As soon as I removed the .AVI extension from the mplayer options and let Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder (0.93) play the video, graphics were garbled again!

Please check DirectShow Decoder therefore. There must be a bug; I shit you not.

For now, I can live with MPlayer playing the video(s), but it should not be a general solution.

You guys maybe even NEED this video to believe me.
If you have an ftp or something of that kind, I'll be honored to upload it for you guys to show that I'm not fantasizing.

Note: in_mplayer.dll uses the included mplayer.dll for all video decoding, whereas in_dshow.dll uses whatever DirectShow filters are installed on your system :/

Well, this even sounds a bit negative, though, heh

But it's indeed the FULL ORIGINAL Indeo package that I installed.

I think the bug will never be possible to show to you unless I pass you the original distribution of the (slightly older) package I use!
Codecs included: v3.2, v4.5 and v5.11.

Installer is 1.97 MB (2.068.266 bytes) from March 10th, 2003.
Internal file version number is 2.11.15.0.

I think now I've really given all info possible.

So, how can I do it now?
I think it does not make much sense in theorizing; I should know how to pass you this file so you can see that Winamp is really incompatible with the '03 Indeo package.
