Live smartlists

So what's the deal? Where's the revolution? And can I help with anything?

Does any other software besides iTunes use live smartlists?

Didn't mean it in a naggy way, I'm sorry. You've done an awesome job already. The main reason I'm starting the thread is to ask if I can help with the development. That should have been much clearer.

Okay. Too bad, I'd like to contribute somehow...

Just curious, how does the live part work? Can you control how smartlists sort on the iPod?

i believe the 'live' means that if you have a smartlist that says "all songs 4 stars above"

or "playcount of 15"

and you go over 15 in a playcount or you rate a song 4-5 on the ipod, it will add to that smartlist *on* the ipod

There is no reset button on life... but the graphics kick ass

The difference between what we have currently and 'live' lists is that we have to write 2 extra "data objects" with each playlist. These data objects contain data relating to how the list is to be sorted, and what criteria you've given the list.

Because they (obviously) don't support my SmartShuffle methods, I don't think I'll use live smart playlists much.

You could be given an option to shuffle the list or sort by chosen criteria, perhaps? Or does the sorting data object have to be present and non-shuffly? What's SmartShuffle?

electricmime, yeah I knew what they were, just wanted some more depth.

Have you used the normal smart playlists yet? Currently you can sort by different criteria (when you click a sort option, it puts a check by it). It uses this, the limiting options, and some querying criteria to decide the playlist. When you hit refresh it re-determines stuff.

Anyway, a quick update on this front, I've written the code to write the live smart playlist data objects to the database, I just gotta work out a clever way to convert from a winamp-style query to an itunes-style query. This is difficult.
