Mpeg videos will not play

I have recently had problems with mpeg files playing in winamp. I have no problems playing .avi files in winamp, and mpeg files will play on another video player i have (total video player), but not on winamp or windows mp. I tried the clean install of winamp 5.32 without any result. I also have recently installed ffdshow, and still no luck. I have attached hopefully all the info that is needed.

Hmm, it's just a standard .mpg with MPEG1 video & MP2 audio.
You shouldn't even need ffdshow for that, but more than likely some 3rd-party mpeg splitter/decoder is messing things up for you (eg. one of ligos, cyberlink, funbox, nero - all of which come with an mpeg decoder, heh).

Try re-registering the default Windows MPEG Splitter / decoder, via:

Start > Run
regsvr32 quartz.dll

still no joy?

Upgrade to the latest ffdshow (you're using some ancient version).

Then go to:
Start > programs > ffdshow > video decoder config > codecs
Make sure MPEG1 is set to one of 'libavcodec' or 'libmpeg2', and not 'disabled'
(eg. click where it says 'disabled' and change it via the drop-down menu)
Click Apply / OK

Repeat for: start > programs > ffdshow > audio decoder config > codecs
Change 'MP1,MP2' to 'libmad'

If the problem persists, the one bit of required info you forgot to tell us is what directshow filters winamp says it's using (via alt+3) when you try to play said .mpg video.

This will help us to determine which dodgy ds splitter/filter(s) is/are to blame for the problem.

On a (probably) unrelated note... try to fix this entry with HijackThis:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winbfi32 - winbfi32.dll (file missing)

winbfi32.dll is related to the Look2Me trojan.
Thankfully, it says "file missing",
but the fact that it was there in the first place is not good.

Mpeg videos will not play

Okay, I have update ffdshow, and verified that the entries are not disabled. I also deleted the questionable file with hijack, and re-registered quartz.dll. I just tried to play an .mp4 file, and found that .mp4's will play the audio, but no video. Mpeg's still won't initiate and when I use the alt-3 option in winamp, the "currently used filters" dialog box is blank, even though all other file info shows up. I tried to rendering the file using g-spot, and it came up with an error message:

Rendering failed. Following is the error reported by DirectShow

0x80004005: Unspecified error

As the frustration mounts...the idea of a format and reinstall of XP sounds so much better. Just kidding. Thanks for your help.

oh, and i'm including a list of installed codecs listed from g-spot

Try disabling the Ligos MPEG Splitter

Start > Run
regsvr32 /u Mpeg2Parser.ax

Then re-register quartz.dll (as in previous post)

Then make sure ffdshow video & audio decoder configs are set as in the attached screenshot below.

For MP4 Video, see here
