Windows 2k3 server is out, which is like xp but without eye candy and with server addons. Are they making a regular win2k3? cause i haven't heard about it. It could prolly make toast if you have a robot? :P and xp runs 98 progies.

Nope.

Windows 2003 is NOT a desktop OS. It's a server OS and if you are honestly not running some kind of server then you don't need it, just stick with XP. Server 2003 has basically the same stuff as XP except more stuff for a server. It even has all the eye candy XP has. All you have to do is turn on the 'Themes' service. It's vice versa for XP too, if you don't like the eye candy, then just turn off the 'Themes' service.

If you're calling it a "peice of shit" then why are you probably using a copy of Windows right now? And why do you mention having to wait for a new version? If you don't like it, don't use it. There are alternatives like Linux. What's this about '98 prog support'? Most programs I used in 98 work perfectly fine in Windows XP and so did it in Windows 2000. Most apps you consider '98 progs' would probably even run in Windows 95.

Why would you want to use Microsoft software to run on a server anyway? Any Unix flavour will beat the crap out of 2k3.

What I mean when I say progs is AOL 5.0, ccoms ect.
And I didnt say all microsoft software was a piece of shit, XP is almost perfection. Longhorn will probrably be rushed and have more bugs then a cheap hooker motel. XP was the only thing done right. 98 is unstable as hell with alot of bugs, and ME runs like 98 on crack n acid.

Rushed? So a product whose development was started on maybe a year or two ago and still has a still good two years to go is rushed?

Compatabitly mode doesnt work
You might be right, but the system might be so complex that instead of 2 yeard it takes 5 years to build

Actually, Windows 2000 came quite a while before XP and is at least just as good as XP. Personally, I think it's better because it doesn't have the resource absorbing graphics extras.

I disagree, because it doesn't have all the security fixes, and xp's graphical differences A)don't take up much in the way of resources and B) are optional anyway. But that's just me.

two words: Windows Update.

2k is so much better because it's less user friendly. There is such a thing as too user friendly...esp. for a computer geek like me.

Win 2k with SP4 is MORE uptodate than win XP with SP1 .... with SP4 it's one step closer to perfection, but MS will never get there only open OS's with Real programmers, and a lot of time will do that

Windows .NET Server 2003 is the server version of Windows XP. But im not sure if this is the version of Windows you may be talking about. If indeed it's called, Windows 2003, then it must be a newer version of windows 2000.

The full name of it is Windows Server 2003. '.Net' was dropped from the name not long before it was released.

Linux is a looooooooooooooooong way from perfection, and I do mean a long way.

I think Microsoft should make two "Home" versions of their products. One for soccer moms, family-types, low-power users who want eye candy but don't have the need for brute force. The other for "power users" who need streamlined codebases, reasonable stability, and functionality to the point that you can modify the OS itself. Basically, Winux. I know Microsoft will probably produce the first, but never the second, even though it would help relations with tech-savvy people.

When driving a Classic Mopar, be sure to run over as many Geo/Chevrolet Metros as possible.

Windows 2000 is based on NT...it even says, "based on NT technology," on the boot screen.

The new windows XP in the production line seems to be awful. I mean it's cracking down on piracy. I mean where else will we get the lastest music, films and software. Of course I would like to buy all my software - but i use so much of it I can't afford to. I'm only a student. Don't the software companies get enough from the rich ass people and companies??

I highly doubt that longhorn will actually intertwine with every single file and send responces to the server everytime you open one. I mean first off, that would go against privacy laws, and 2nd not everyone has broadband, not everyone can afford to be online every second. If longhorn actually goes into production as planned there will be a mass change to linux or mac. I don't know about you but I personally don't want microsoft knowing every single file I open, every email I read. If I want to play vice city while downloading GGW and printing the anarchist cookbook, thats MY buinsness. Frankly, I'm no lawyer but I don't think longhorn is legal.

windows XP is built on top of windows 2000. XP just has a bundle of extra features (which i decided i didn't want - except maybe the better compatibility, but i've lived with it long enough that i no longer care) - they're basically the same operating system. i don't find winXP any easier to use, but i could see how it would be an easier "first" OS for people new to computers. it's also quite clever in its way of hinting at people to organise data, and to use certain features. i like that.
