Winamp 4 Linux

It was a long time ago, Winamp3 was in late beta release. rumors about winamp for linux was so loud that a FAQ section was written about it.

It was even released a winamp for linux alpha that nobody was able to run.

Than I started to use linux only and for some time I did not cared about winamp at all. The very last time I visited these web pages winamp 5 was going to be released, a few day later I formatted my last FAT32 partition to ReiserFS and windows was no more.

At the time I missed pretty much a good mp3 player for linux, I missed winamp a lot and tryed half a dozen different players but none was as good as winamp was.

Today there are dozens of media players for linux, many of them are far better than any winamp version. You are too late.

Wianmp sucks.

Winamp sucks because it doesn't run on Linux? Wonderful.

Yeah, but nobody really care about Linux except Linux users. So it's no big deal.

XMMS does most of what Winamp does. Foobar2000 runs fine through Wine (I'm assured, although it makes my ancient linux box die in hilarious ways), and I prefer it to Winamp. Other Linux players are Rhythmbox (which I prefer to XMMS) and Xfmedia (which runs pretty fast, as it's one of the Xfce4 apps).

Closer to topic, Winamp 3 would've probably run on Linux, but its development was basically branched to merge it with Winamp 2 (thus "5"), to provide a "features of 3, code maturity of 2" sort of thing, so the cross-platform core of 3 was unfortunately lost. Which is why the Linux backtracking.

As far as I can (drunkenly, admittedly) tell, you're the first person to mention Winamp "4" in this thread. Why'd you bring it up?

and to add more confusion onto things... there was a Winamp 4, well the 5.0 alphas reported a version of 0x4999 (that's in hex )

and because an app doesn't have a version for a different OS is a pretty crap arguement. it was never designed for it, and this whole 'porting winamp' shit really really pisses me off since it's not fucking simple like all these linux fanboys think! and if OSS is meant to be the way then they'd better quit spending their time moaning about the players on the linux platform being lame and do some fucking work on it! (use that bitching time for something productive)
