im glad to hear that so many people are interested in such an application. I have released a first version on my website.

it supports reading and writing the winamp db and some media formats including id3 tags and popm frames.

its free, and i'm currently not thinking about making it open source.

you can have a look at a first test-version of Mp3 Rating Friend on
http:// www . moedinger.it
http://www.moedinger.it

but please be very carefully and backup your winamp database in any case because larger databases will get corrupt!!!
currently only german language supported.
Tested with Winamp 5.552 and an actual WMP version

i'm confused...

will it work with 5.56, which is the current version?

will it work with winamp in english? i don't speak German.

and are you saying the database if it is large is sure to get corrupted if i use this plugin? what is large? i have ~38k tracks.

does it support half stars?

to read his webpage in english:

wursthand,

be sure to read this thread:

Erland is a very gifted programmer, near you relatively speaking, and would be very helpful to your development of this plugin!

I think that wursthand's entry should be altered, that larger databases will get corrupt. This should be noted at the very beginning. This is what happened to me now. Thanks a lot! Shame on you.

Winamp, please finally write ratings to the file!!!

he did warn it, and said to do a backup. i mentioned it too.

i think attacking the one person trying to make this happen for your own silly mistake is ignorant.

I spend a couple of hours to re-engineer the Nullsoft Database Engine since it is only very poor documented.
Now I found out how to write valid files. I'm currently testing with a database of 30k entries and Winamp version 5.56.
Half-stars are not yet implemented.

Current restrictions are:
-algorithm to write the winamp db is slow
-no internationalisation
-no sophistiicated installer
-not tested very well, please let winamp rating friend always make a copy of your database files

Please check my website for the new vesion.

no need to worry - just give it a try.
and if really something should go wrong what i dont expect - there will be a backup of the database in your ml folder unless you haven't deactivat the feature in the settings dialog. please provide feedback of your experience

hi,

my first impressions are very positive, i'll have more to say later.

however, i really think you need to make this a winamp plugin, b/c when i rate a song or album in winamp, i want the value written to the POPM frame immediately, likewise if i scan in a song, i want the POPM read at that time. i do not want an intermediate separate app step, if you see what i mean? that would be too hard to keep track of, on a large library like mine.

but i think this is a great start, and hopefully not the end of your development!

thanks for your opinion.
i wanted to create an universal application to share ratings between different players. currently im working on an interface to the itunes database. this wouldnt be possible with winamp plugin.
a winamp plugin would bring up a bunch of questions: who is the master - the database or the file? what if other applications changed the rating? with mp3 rating friend the user is the master.

the file, imo, should always be the master and the db should always reflect whats in the file. if a change is made to the rating in the winamp UI it should update both the file and the DB simultaneously.

if someone had ratings in winamp DB already, then you could have an option to scan in the files without consideration of POPM, and then apply DB values to the POPM post scan. but that should only ever be a one time thing.

i don't really care about itunes or WMP. to put that another way, i want my music rated by and for winamp, and if it is possible to make the POPM values work for WMP and itunes, then by all means, great, but what i am looking for is simplicity, ie. ease of use via winamp first and foremost. i think that means a plugin is needed, so that ratings from files can be read at scan time, and so that ratings can be applied simultaneously to both the file and the DB.

thanks for the mp3 rating friend tool. thanks to it I can now get rid off winamp. I was using it for 15 years but it's stagnating for such a long time. a story like icq. from hero to zero. my phone can do much more, stream server and client at the same time. winamp doesn't even know that it is common to play music on a receiver through wifi. it can't even store those ratings to existing (not new) files from playlist. its own "winamp remote" cannot even list its own files by rating etc. it's all just half product. switching to windows media player, the tool i always disabled on my pc completely. rip winamp.

for several versions now, winamp CAN write ratings to files, new or old, IF it is enabled in prefs.

also, it isn't common to stream to a receiver. while some do airplay, and some do dlna, most do neither, and even less people even know about it.

i would like to see winamp become a dlna server/control point however. there are some recent threads talking about 3rd party plugins for that.
