m3u files open winamp but don't play anything
I have several hundred folders with .m3u and .mp3 in them.
I got a new computer and installed Winamp fresh. When I double-click the m3u files, winamp opens but the playlist is unchanged (whatever was in the playlist previously is still there). Basically opening any m3u file is no different than opening winamp directly. When I drag an m3u file into the playlist, it will play the mp3 file properly. So what's going on? How do I fix this? I already tried deleting all %appdata%\winamp\*.m3u and *.m3u8 files and it doesn't fix the issue. My file associations look good, screenshot here: ![]() Any ideas? |

Your .m3u file association doesn't look correct to me. The .m3u extension should be listed the same as the .m3u8 extension, namely as a Winamp playlist file (not as an URL:Winamp Command Handler).

I'm glad you got your .m3u file association sorted out.
I don't use Winamp to play video files, but your .m4v association is also partly incorrect. M4V is not a Winamp playlist file. The M4V file format is a video container format developed by Apple and is very similar to the MP4 format. The primary difference is that M4V files may optionally be protected by DRM copy protection. I also noticed that you are not using the Windows 10 default parent folders (i.e. Program Files and Program Files (x86)) for installing 64 bit and 32 bit apps. This is one way of getting around most of the restrictions keeping older apps from directly writing to the registry, but it is not foolproof.
