Are you using Vista 32-bit or 64-bit? You can check this in Control Panel>System.

I'm using Vista 32bit edition. Say, whats the real nature of this problem? is my RAM amount is not enough? or is Vista screw up my Winamp?

Hello,

I just patched my machine with Service Pack 1 (Wave 0) and now Winamp won't play anything! I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled but to no avail.

It was working perfectly well under Vista (Business) straight.

Winamp is running perfectly on Vista for me.
Please provide the required information (have you even clicked the link above yet?), otherwise we cannot help you.

The two logs will show us your startup and currently running processes, and a heap of info about Winamp and its plugins. Without knowing all that info, we can only try to guess what the cause of the problem is, let alone the solution. Alas, we are not psychic.

I had the exact same problem but that was due to a conflict with installed software on my machine.

The conflicting software in my case was WindowBlinds 6 and the solution was to add Winamp.exe to the exclusion list so it won't attempt to skin it.

Yup, this has been reported before:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=289292
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=290322

But we've no way of knowing if you've got WindowBlinds installed unless you tell us (or your HJT log shows us).

Does RocketDock have an exclusion list, so you can add Winamp?
Or if Winamp is already docked, try removing it...

EDIT

Aha!

DiskWriter is the active output plugin. Doh!
Quote:
<< Output plugins >>

Nullsoft DirectSound Output v2.47 (d) [out_ds.dll]
Nullsoft Disk Writer v2.14 [out_disk.dll] [active]
If you can get to: Winamp -> Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Plugins -> Output,
Select (highlight) DirectSound Output instead, to make it active.

Basically, because DiskWriter is active, every time you try to play anything, Winamp will be attempting to write it to a WAV file instead of playing it. Reasons for why this could cause a crash on Vista is if DiskWriter is configured to write to a folder without write permissions, eg. C:\ root folder.

If you can't get into Prefs, open this file in Notepad:

C:\Users\paskal\AppData\Roaming\Winamp\Winamp.ini

and change this line accordingly:

outname=out_ds.dll

(yours will currently say: outname=out_disk.dll)

Maybe it's an issue caused by Internet Explorer 8 beta?

Is there a way to uninstall it and rollback to IE7?

Does Winamp still crash if you temporarily disable the Media Library?

With Winamp closed, go to the "C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins" folder,
create a new "Backup" subfolder in there,
cut+paste gen_ml.dll into this new subfolder.

Restart Winamp.

Does it still crash?

If yes, then you can restore gen_ml.dll because it's not causing the crash.

If no, then it's time to work out which Media Library plugin is to blame....

Close Winamp.

Move gen_ml.dll back into the Plugins folder.

Cut+paste all ml_*.dll files into the "Backup" subfolder.

ml_autotag.dll
ml_bookmarks.dll
ml_dash.dll
ml_disc.dll
ml_history.dll
ml_local.dll
ml_nowplaying.dll
ml_online.dll
ml_orb.dll
ml_plg.dll
ml_playlists.dll
ml_pmp.dll
ml_rg.dll
ml_transcode.dll
ml_wire.dll

Reopen Winamp.

Does it still crash?

If no, close Winamp and start re-enabling each ml plugin, one at a time (by moving them back into the Plugins folder), closing & reopening Winamp inbetween, until the problem reoccurs.

Let us know which ml plugin caused the crash.

If none of the above, try temporarily disabling the Sonic Burning Engine.

With Winamp closed, cut+paste Winamp\primosdk.DLL into a new "Backup" subfolder.
Reopen Winamp
Does it still crash?

Also confirm that when you did the clean install you made sure you deleted the contents of the "C:\Users\paskal\AppData\Roaming\Winamp" folder first.

Note, AppData is a hidden folder by default, so you'll need to make sure you can view hidden files/folders in Folder Options Control Panel -> View tab first. Or just type %AppData%\Winamp into Start -> Run.

I have a similar set up and now afraid to install. Is 64 bits a problem? I also have Ultimate version, on a Dell M2300... have to say I have been very close to upgrading to XP for months now.

Well, now you've got to follow the rest of my instructions.

gen_ml.dll IS the Media Library.

Without gen_ml.dll present then nothing will happen when you try to open the ML, because it's no longer there.

So the next step is to find out which ml plugin was causing the problem...

Fair enough. But that doesn't help us to determine the cause/solution or to help anyone else experiencing the same problem. Maybe they do want to use the ML...?

Doesn't the Dashboard use Internet Explorer to access the Internet? If it does, then maybe there's an incompatibility with IE8 beta. But it's beta so... Not much to do if it's gonna be constantly changing.

And I'm sure there's a way to go back to IE7.

And you've also added Winamp to WindowBlinds exclusion list?

If yes, then does it still crash after you go to:
Winamp -> Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Media Library -> Local Media -> Options tab
and uncheck "Display 'Show Info' in media and album views"?

I get the same crash, but i have two accounts, the Administrator one, and a Limited User One.

In the Administrator i had no problem, but in the Limited One, winamp crash every time.
When i remove the gen_im.dll work perfectly in the two accounts.
