So that's what caused the hurricanes and gale force winds over here in New Zealand — everyone over there in america rushing to the stores to get Linux and WINE ...

Have you guys heard of the new Linux that is being devoloped at the moment ... Lindows? It is meant to emulate all the windows programs exactly as they were made to run ... but have the stability of Linux. I can't wait for that to come out.

[EDIT]Oh oh ... that post bonked me over the one hundred post limit for "Member". Now I'm going to have to change my avatar ... .[/EDIT]

I hope so, but im guessing it wont be. Microsoft wouldnt be too happy about it unless they got their kickback. Microsoft is very anti linux.

Please dont say im MS bashing, what i've stated is fact.

Well I heard there were some big (and I mean big) court cases over Lindows. The devolopers want it to be free, but if Bill get's anywhere near the price tag it won't be. Well, of course, if he gets anywhere near Lindows at all it will be nonexistent.

And I'm not MS Bashing either.

Oh well, here's hoping it will be free ...

No. They will charge for it.

Is there any real point in getting it apart from playing with it to see what it does?

No.

The devolopers want it to be free anyway. Bill Gates doesn't want it to be free.

'Nuff said.

It's not going to be free.

So whats this about a system called Redhat?

Why does it differ and why is it bad / good?

And what's Unix (or something like that) like?

Redhat is a distribution of linux...Just like SuSE, Mandrake and a few others...Each offer extra bits and pieces, but theyre all pretty much the same underneath.

If lindows is built upon the GNU of Linux then I think it has to be free. Otherwise it will have to use either it's own code or some code which isn't based upon the GNU.

(It is the GNU isn't it or is it the GPL? God I dunno the usual Linux open source lisence anyways)

billy billy, fucking silly,
four eyed whore, just another sore.

95 was shit, we all know,
98 came, charging more dough,

2000 was something, but we had to pay,
and then came XP, same shit on a different day

fuck bill, fuck microsoft,
dumb-ass users, is all they crave,
fucking pissed, i want billy in his grave.

ahem:

as u expected-

activation cracked XP Pro, Unpaid 98 on partition 2 , Mandrake Linux 8 on partition 3 , Netscape , Internet Explorer is there cuz I have to test My clients webpages on both browsers.

Trust me I use XP just like most microsoft haters do. Swear to GOD if linux had a few more things I would think its too expensive to even install XP !!! not worth it.

actually if u look at it from a different angle. i use photoshop, i mostly use winamp, i use yahoo messenger, 90% of the software i use is non-microsoft but the suckers dont make 'em for linux. except some

i predict in a year linux will have similar or better stuff and people will have a choice a 100% switch ability.

peace.

trust me man, when u are a victim of the system , its hard to know you are...

how many things are there in windows XP that u really use everyday and its worth that 1-2 hundred bucks?

notepad, calculator, WMP, solitaire maybe, messenger, internet explorer . c'mon man i know its a decent OS but is it worth that much?

you are correct, if i were a developer, i would rather make for the masses. but like i said, lot of things that are made for windows are made for Mac too. and its just a mtter of time before we get it for linux. StarOffice 6 is out and they are charging a price for it. People are buying it.

But don't forget taht Staroffice is also available on PC, and SUN are not necessarily bothered about it as they make their money in other ways.

One of the best features on XP that i have found is the incredible stablity of the system.

you bet!

incredible is the word but not in stability.
but in hanging up. swear upon GOD with 256 DDR Athlon 1.4 system that i had it used to crash and come into the new BLUE SCREEN
but thanx GOD its not as much as 98 or Me

but now i put 256 Meg's more and things are little better.

if you tell anyone else XP is stable they will laugh their balls off!!! my personal guarantee.

i have 98se and stability is always a tossup. it may run for hours without a glitch, or give me problems right after i turn it on. i may check inti xp, or reformat and dual boot with red hat. [note]people may not like some linux OS because (ie)suse comes on 8 disks[/note]

Now with more reliable systems, 98 should be used if you have an old pc only. If you are doing important work and you cat afford your pc to crash, use 2k. Use Windows XP if you want to have a mess around but at the moment its not a stable as 2k.

My grandmother uses Windows XP and she doesn't have a problem with it,
and she doesn't have a problem with her Aol acount either.

um... welcome to the forums! Whats with the pic??

Hmm... You really should go with 2K. XP does crash more often. It is a risk I am just not willing to take.

It also depends on the hardware configuration and software as to why the things crash.

I'm running XP Pro... *cough* cracked *cough*... i dont think the majority of people that have it paid for it

i think it's an ok OS, but it's not AS stable as some people build it up to be... but it is definately better than some previous windows versions... , and it was real cheap

Very true indeed. But when there seems to be a problem with compatibility with alot of people, that generally means that there is a fault somewhere with the OS itself.

I've been running XP Pro since May and it's only crashed for me once.
Considering that I like to multitask, that's quite a feat.

My computer is also 800mHz, none the less...

but looking at both sides of the story, some harware is so shitty and / or not used by many so there is likely to be compat issues!

Especially when the harware comes with shit drivers! BELIEVE ME! My old soundcard was a fucking nightmare to install with my drivers!!!
