Winamp Backup Tool v1.0 Beta 11.1 available

1.0 Beta 11.1:

- added backup and restoration of 'Enhancer' DSP Plugin Skins
- added backup and restoration of 'Enhancer' DSP Plugin Presets*
- added backup and restoration of 'Nullsoft Signal Processing Studio' DSP Plugin Presets
- added backup and restoration of 'Toaster' Plugin Skins
- added backup and restoration of 'Toaster' Plugin Settings

* DrO's Enhancer Wrapper isn't a day old and Backup Tool cares about it, this is fast, huh?

The main reason for this unplanned release was, that I was disapointed, that I simply forgot to add Nullsoft DSP SPS presets and Enhancer skins.

The release was taken from our branch, it's independent from the major changes, which are planned/worked on for the UAC issues. Again the next bigger build will be released when it's done.

Enjoy,
Chris

"forbidden chars" message attempting to backup to mapped drives

I am a new user (using beta 11.1 on Windows 7 32 bit, UAC turned off) trying out the backup. On my first attempt to backup I got the error "Warning: path is invalid. Reason: it contains forbidden chars". I was trying to backup to what seemed the most logical place to me, a drive mapped to my NAS mirror. No errors if I choose a physically attached drive but any drive mapping fails with this error. I did not see any mention of this when I searched the thread.

I tried several different ones including:
M:\WinampBackup
M:\fubar
M:\test
N:\temp

These are all valid paths (in most cases I created the folder while browsing from the backup tool).

All of those paths I listed gave the error. So, they ARE valid paths for Windows but the backup tool says they contain invalid characters. When I simply changed the drive letter to C: or E: (a USB attached drive) it worked fine.

No complaints; I appreciate the efforts to provide a backup solution. I was a bit surprised that it considers a mapped drive "forbidden" and wanted to let people know that is what happens...

Winamp Backup Tool v1.0 Beta 11.2 available

1.0 Beta 11.2:

- added backup and restoration of Winamp Pro registration data
- fixed path creation for mapped drives

Johnfv: Pawel thanksfully looked at the issue and this build hopefully should fix your issues.

Maybe the ability to backup/restore the pro reg infos should prevent people from losing their key, hehe.

I've attached Revision 3 of the English language file. So translators are able to localize it.

From now on, all changes for 1.0 will be code changes, which don't require any GUI change. We only fix typos in the English language file (if we still find some).

Further informations about the localization of the documentation file and the plugin will follow later.

Download Winamp Backup Tool English Language file 1.0 Rev #3

Yet another 11.x release will follow within the next days.

Again a couple of minor fixes and tweaks. I thought we could focus all on the UAC issues and the docu file only now. I haven't planned to work on the branch as intensive as I did over the last days, but things never happen like you'd expect them, hehe.

Is this tool for moving my winamp setup to an external HD?

Somewhat naive user here, so I just want to be crystal clear about what this tool should be used for.

I have run out of space on my PC for any more Winamp files (or any files, for that matter). I would like to move my entire Media Library to a portable hard disk, and then keep adding to it. I also would like to take the HD with me when I travel and use it with my laptop PC.

I would be happy to learn more about Winamp config files, etc, so please just point me in the right direction!

Thank you for all your help! I love Winamp!

Best regards,
//Cliff

The main aim of the tool is to provide a backup function for all configuration files, media library database, skins etc. A lot of people have corrupted setting files or lost their settings and ratings, so the ability to create backups and restore all things later when needed, was one of the most wanted features.

You can also use the tool to port your winamp installation from one system to another. But if you move you entire music files, you must change the path(s) under Preferences > Media Library > Local Media > Watch Folders. It's impossible for any tool, to autodetect, where you have moved your music files to.

Independent of the tool, when you want to store your files on an external HDD, you better should use 'Nullsoft Portable Media Player support' and 'Nullsoft USB device support'. The file letter for external drives can change dynamically, when your reconnect your drive, while the USB plugin saves all settings directly on the drive.

Need more info wrt Portable and USB

Koopa, thank you for your reply.

Since I am a naive user, I do not know what do with the info you have provided:

"..you better should use 'Nullsoft Portable Media Player support' and 'Nullsoft USB device support'. The file letter for external drives can change dynamically, when your reconnect your drive, while the USB plugin saves all settings directly on the drive."

Conceptually, I understand the issues.

In the Forum, Post All Winamp 5.581 Official Plugin Bug Reports In This Thread, I have found reference to:
-Nullsoft Portable Music Player Support v1.27 [ml_pmp.dll]
-Nullsoft USB Device Plug-in v1.1 [pmp_usb.dll]

Searching the Plug-ins for these dlls produces no result.
Searching the web for these dlls produces "One for Nunz" notepad lists of plugins installed on other user's machines.

What do I do now? Could you be so kind as to provide additional instructions and links?

Thnx!

//Cliff

These plugins are part of Winamps Pro and Full installers and you can check them in the components page of the installer.

http://meggamusic.co.uk/shup/1286999709/usb.png

When these plugins are installed and you plug your external HDD in, while Winamp is running, it asks you if you want to mange the drive with Winamp. Press 'Yes' and then you can see you external HDD in Media Library > Portable Players

Winamp Backup Tool v1.0 Beta 11.3 available

1.0 Beta 11.3:

- added Turkish language file (thanks to Ali Sarıoğlu)
- added PortugueseBR language file (thanks to Anderson Silva aka candiba)
- added Russian language file (thanks Alexander Nureyev aka VIPer)
- added Japanese language file (thanks to T-Matsuo)
- added a bunch of cosmetically tweaks to the GUI
- added hidden option to force the language selector to appear (set Lang=0 in Winamp_Backup_Tool.ini)
- made custom page uses a GUI.exe instead of a fixed standard page*
* allows us to be much more flexible with the design of the page
* vastly improved design of components page, there shouldn't be any horizontal scrollbar in any language anymore
- redesigned Finish page (smaller image, new donation section, mail link)
- fixed a couple of glitches in German language file
- tweaked several parts of the GUI to be more translation friendly
- changed components page checkbox icons to look more like Winamp
- [Installer] forced installer to show an icon in Windows programs/software menu
- [Installer] added small donation section to Finish page
- [Installer] made installer doesn't create donation start menu entries anymore

So the 11.x series continues and brings tons of improvements and is available in Turkish and PortugueseBR as well, thanks to Ali and candiba for that.

* Pawel is a great programmer

if it doesn't then i'd hold out on adding support for it until a few things are clarified over where the settings are meant to be saved to with the dsp_sc plug-in.

Winamp Backup Tool v1.0 Beta 11.5 available

Yeah I work too much on it.

1.0 Beta 11.5:

- added French language file (thanks to Veekee)
- added simple update check to the tool
- added reminder function, if user ignored available update
- added more ALT key hotkeys to the GUI (Finish Page mainly)
- changed format of log file from ANSI to Unicode
- made that backup mode creates an integrity file
- fixed nasty glitch if user tries to restores files from a path, which contains no valid backup data (Restoration path now must include an integrity file, otherwise restoration won't work)*
- fixed inconsistencies with icons in warning messages
- [Installer] more improvements on finish page for translators

* Note: You must run the Tool one time in Backup mode to get the integrity file, otherwise Restoration won't work.

1. There is now an update button in the tool. If the build number on the server is higher than the current build number, a message will appear, which informs the user about the update:

2. Update reminder

If user checked for an update and a newer version is available, but user pressed 'No' in the notification (he ignored the update), backup tool will write current build number and the server build number to the ini file. It compares the build numbers on next start and provides a message, that there still is an update available.

3. Restoration integrity check

Backup tool now creates an integrity check file, if you use the tool personal, you must run the tool in backup mode one time, to get the integrity file, otherwise restoration won't work.

This was needed to prevent a restoration from a folder, which has no single file to backup. The tool acted really weird in these cases.

4. With that release, the English language file has been updated to v1.0 Rev 5. The other available language files are not up to date yet. I've published the newer example file today, but the restoration fix is important, so i release the version before we grabbed newer lng files.

As soon as we get updated language file, I'll recompile and we can test the updater.

it should correctly backup any v2 instance of the plug-in. i can't comment on v1.9x support as that never saved its settings in the correct location anyway (if at all on Vista / Win7).

Supporting older versions makes no sense, since you can only download 2.0.2 at shoutcast.com and the older versions don't save settings under Vista/Win7.

You can simply put the main exe file on a USB stick, the installer isn't needed, but settings will be always saved in same dir like Winamp settings, though.

Sorry to be a pain but this tool is AMAZING and I want to be sure of 1 thing... does it backup 'play count' and 'last played'?

Also, just a little thing you sensible people might be able to help me out with. I think I have been a bit daft in having WinAmp installed on C:\ but having it look at my music library which I have located on D:\
Have just realised this may be daft because IF this greta tool backs up my play counts etc - in order to ever restore them or transfer them to another PC I would need to have 2 drives as the path to the files would be D:\
So in effect, am I making a problem for myself by not having my music on C:\?

Cheers for the answer to (1) and the advice on (2).

Kudos to the Backup Tool writers!!!!

It is able to back up the whole library database, which includes play count and last played as well, as other things like ratings etc.

Winamp's library is completely based on absolute file paths. So ideally, if you've stored your music files on e.g. D:\Music\ before, you should use the same path structure when you restore your database or transfer your Winamp configuration to another PC.

Otherwise you have to do some fine tuning, before all will work again. If the music was located on d:\Music if you made the backup and you decide to store your music on c:\Music in future, you must set the new location under Preferences > Media Library > Local Media > Watched Folders and make a rescan after your restored the data with the tool.

I'm glad that you like the tool, maybe it was worth to spend so much time on it, hehe.

Thanks Koopa.

Like the tool? Its ABSOLUTELY SUPERB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!

Anyway, Yeah, you verified my horror about having my music on a D:\ path.

You are right in having to do a rescan if I moved it to a C:\ path but correct me if I am wrong - that would have your awesome tool useless to me as I would not be able to retreive the playcount and history of the track settings as they would have all be backed up to path showing D:\.

So in your valuable opinion to me - would you agree it is far better for me to simply move all the tracks over to C:\ now and start again with my playcounts because if I continue much longer there will come a point were a format and restore of data will mean I have lost the playcounts anyway as the backed up data is looking for D:\

Your expertise and opinion are much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Honestly I don't see any point in moving all to C:\. I'm using the same system for storing my music for an age.

Winamp is installed in:

D:\Programme\Winamp

Winamp Settings are stored under:

C:\Users\Chris\Appdata\Roaming\Winamp

and my music is stored in subfolders of:

D:\Musik\

When I format my system or use a new HDD whatever, I simply put my music on D:\Musik again, install Winamp and restore my database with the tool.

I even was able to port all my settings from a Windows XP system to Windows 7 (keep in mind that both systems use different paths for storing the data) and all worked fine, I just used the same root for my music again.

You do not have to use the same drive letter for Winamp and your music, that isn't necessary for restoration. It's only important, that your music is located on the same dir, like it was when you ran the backup.

So if you use D:\, I fail to see why you should rebuild your library on C:\ instead.

It doesn't matter on which PC you restore the data, just make sure, that the main path of your music is the same, when you're running the restoration, otherwise you need fine tuning.

That Winamp saves all stuff with absolute paths isn't really flexible, but I guess the rules for a perfect restoration of your data aren't that bad, even for Music stored on other file locations, like D:\ in your case.

And thanks for the kind work, II'm always glad to get some positive feedback.

Yeah Koopa, I completely understand and agree with everything you said.

i suppose I am just being over cautious in that I would like my play counts to be with me a long time and just feared that if ever I moved everything to a laptop for example I would not be able to resotre the playcounts etc as the paths from the backup would still be looking for a D: drive.

But yeah, I think I will keep my music on D: as I like it to be kept away from my operating system anyway - better still it gets backed up every weekend to E: LOL

That is amazing that setting from XP translated to windows7 so flawlessly - good work.

Just as a little bit of info which you probably already know. I remember looking at all this a while ago before I found your amazing tool and remember reading somewhere that you could get a hex reader to look at the ML library and determine the hex numbers for (example) D:\ then do a complete automated sweep to convert (via hex) that path to C:\. think it was a possible solution to anyone getting stuck with paths on a wrong drive althought it was quite a chore and a little complicated. Just thought I would mention it out of interest.

Anyway, gonna stick with my music on D: thanks for the sound advice.

And lastly, not enough people give thanks and kudos to kind people like yourself for sharing something they have made and I always believe in offering my thanks.

regards.
