Official Winter Skin Contest Thread

First Annual Winter Skin Contest

The moment that some of you have been waiting for is finally here!

Today is the official start of the Winter-themed skin contest.

Rules:
Skins should have a Winter theme - the rest is up to you. This will require imagination on the part of our friends basking near the equator or warming up in the Southern Hemisphere - think of your skin as a cool refreshing drink on a hot day...

If you just want to make a skin and enter it, and it has nothing to do with Winter, go right ahead. Just remember that one of the judging categories will be how the skin relates to the Winter theme.

The contest will run for two months, starting today. All entries are due by January 4th, 2003.

Skins can be sent to the following address:

jburnaway(at)yahoo(dot)com

Posting in-progess skins is definitely allowed, if that is your wish. Keep it to yourself, share with the forum, do whatever you want. Collaborate if you'd like.

Judging:
A top-notch panel of judges is being assembled right now. Once the skins are posted, the judges will look 'em over and decide the winnners.

If you are a judge, you can't enter the contest, and if you enter the contest, you can't be a judge.

Bribery attempts are allowed. However, I can't guarantee that it will do you any good.

To keep things on the up-and-up, appearance-wise, I will not be one of the judges (and the crowd goes wild!)

Prizes:
There are, at this time, no guaranteed prizes, other than this:

The winning skin will be nominated for Featured Status

So, the winning skin will not definitely be a featured skin, but keep in mind that a recent skin contest produced three featured Winamp 2 skins. And the fact that the skin will be nominated for featured status gives it a big leg up over the teaming hordes of skins completed by Britney Spears fans every day!

(Other prizes may or may not become available in the near future)

So, put on your earmuffs, grab some hot cocoa, and get skinning!!! What else have you got to do (other than study for finals, go holiday shopping, visit relatives...)

No list of who has entered. I know some people are interested. I think you (skinme!) told me you would probably not enter.

This is not like the avatar contest - if you entered that one and didn't finish, it made a mess of the contest. If you enter this one and don't finish, then there is one less skin to judge, but the only person let down will be yourself (how's that for motivation?)

Two months... cool, I'm definitely in, got 2 projects in the works, WA2 and WA3, so that gives me time to finish those (I hope) and still do a reasonable job on this.

I like contests, make me think of something I normally might not do ^_^

I still don't know if I'm gonna enter... I'll tell you January 4th

Now it's time to look for inspiration

Then be not so quick to deal out death in judgement.

I think I'll have a go at it.

IMHO two months is far too much time. One of the reasons the collab skins contest didnt work was that people assumed they had ample time and most of them forgot about it completley(kinda like what happened to me for the orb contest).

Is there a limit on the number of skins one may submit? I mean, not that I'm likely to even finish a single skin in two months, but I was just wondering since it's not in the rules.

I'm definitely in

So, will it be a WA2 comp? or a a WA2/WA3 comp? If its the latter, will they be judged separately?

It's a good idea to combine a wa2/wa3 contest. But i think it would be best if they were judged seperately.

I hadn't even considered a WA3 version. But the more the merrier!

I will allow WA3 skins, but they will be judged separately.

And flatmatt - enter as many skins as you'd like.

Jones - if this is to be a WA3 skin contest as well, should it be posted in the WA3 forums? And if so, is there a quick and easy way for you to do that for me? Pretty please, with cherries on top (I know how much you like cherries!)

Ah, I understand. What a pity, isn't it. The baths are great. The cow is happy and the monkey have [sic.] a very big cucumber. If the dog is cold, give it a sweater. You're an idiot!

Nope, I don't need to know if you are in or not. However, I won't bug you to finish if I don't know you are entered. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing is up to you!

To be brutally honest, it looks like you just cut out the sections where the buttons go and applied a bevel filter to it. Then did the same for the buttons themselves.

Theres nothing wrong with using a bevel filter in moderation (although using gradients/airbrushing is better IMO), but when a skin is nothing but bevells it tends to look a bit boring.

No need to scrap it, im sure you could make it into something special...It just needs a bit of work to make it stand out.

Sorry if i sounded a bit harsh..I was merely trying to give you a push in the right direction (i had a bevel fetish for a while too).

As for ideas...Hmm...Hang on a sec...Im thinking of entering in this comp..why should i be sharing my ideas..

Atmo, you need to have your lawyer read the fine print

I thought about doing this like the avatar contest (i.e. no peeky!), but I talked it over with ¤db¤, and he pointed out that some people like the input, so posting incomplete skins is allowed.
