winamp won't auto play mp3's

Hi everyone,

I can't find the answer to this anywhere. When I used to click on an mp3 on my hard drive, winamp would start playing it immediately. For some reason, it stopped working, and now I have to drag and drop mp3's into the winamp box for them to start playing.

I have winamp set as the default player for all my music files, within my computer file association and within winamp preferences.
I can't figure out what's wrong. I even tried upgrading to no avail.

Also, other times when I click on an mp3 I want to hear, instead of hearing that mp3, it loads the last song I listened to with winamp.

Can anyone help?

Thank you.

WinXP -> Control Panel -> Folder Options -> File Types tab
MP3 -> Advanced

Actions: Play in Winamp -> Edit

App used command line:
"C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe" "%1"

(all quotation marks inclusive)

Use DDE = checkmarked
Application: winamp
Topic: system
(all other fields = blank)

Click OK

Back in original "MP3 -> Advanced" box
with "Play in Winamp" still hi-lighted,
click "set default"

OK everything

Did Not Work For ME

When I click on a mp3 link on the web, I get a new Internet Explorer window with a symbol in it indicative of file not found. The mp3 downloads into my temporary internet files folder, but winamp does not execute. My file associations are correct per the prior instructions. I upgraded from 5.01 to 5.03 and that didn't improve it.

I know from past monitoring, that Real Player fights with other programs to win back the file associations (from Winamp, WinMedia, etc.), even though it's settings are not supposed to do this the way I have Real set up. I suspect this is the culprit.... all the more reason I don't want Real Player to execute on mp3 files!!

The fix above was mainly for local files, not internet streams.

First, empty your internet cache.

Next, you might well need to edit the registry...
but lo and behold, you didn't tell us what your Windows OS is.

Win2k/XP
Start -> Run -> regedt32

Win9x/ME
Start -> Run -> regedit

Delete any keys/strings referring to mp3 or audio/mpeg under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp3
String in the right pane should read:
Content Type | audio/mpeg

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\audio/mpeg
String in right pane should read:
Extension | .mp3

You could also try mp3.com's mp3fix utility
(although mp3.com is now dead, luckily I saved the installer)

that solved more, i can now play the mp3's directly with IE.
The thing was that quicktime once half installed on my pc, and IE connects to quicktime dll files in the IE plugins folder.

Ok now for the next problem, when i click on a mp3 now, it opens right away, it doesn't ask the question, wether to open it from location or to download it.
It just opens it without questioning, i know this fixable, but how.
greetz & thanks

@Madmega

Please do not revive old threads by crossposting the same post
(in 3 different threads, in this case).
Your question has been answered in your original thread.

I aren't going to lock this thread,
because it's linked to in TSGH and FAQ's.
But I've deleted your post in the 3rd thread (revived thread from 2002)

Note: There is no need to reply here.
