It's another way of monetizing their content. I'm surprised that they didn't do this sooner.

Imagine what the record companies could do if they did the same thing on YouTube. I for one would gladly cough up some money to buy music video's I liked.

Now imagine this . . .

If the music companies allowed people to embed their content off site ( on web sites other than YouTube ) - they could enable a "buy this video" link in the player. The viral spread of their music - coupled with people buying their music video content - would be a very nice cash source. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure the tremendous possibilities that could be achieved.

The possibilities for Indy artists doing this would be phenomenal as well. Viral video with people buying their music. Cumulus or Clear Channel can't even touch this.

The download better be of superior quality than the streamed version though (which can easily be saved with various tools), else they're just exploiting the clueless.
On second thought, that seems to be their business model anyway.

There was once a day when quality was in fashion. Now quality takes a back seat to compression and portability. People would rather have more low resolution videos for phones and portable video players rather than fewer high quality videos for home viewing.

^ Indeed.
I always go by the saying "Quality over quantity."

There is a digital tv service over here which pretty much hailed as the major replacement for traditional analogue tv, called Freeview, some of the lamer channels have been reducing there picture resolution and bitrate which looks awful - but hey it a good reflection of the programmes they show.
