Why doesn't winamp play .rm files???
.rm means Real Media Player.
its a stream. Real Media Player won't work for me no matter how hard I try. I want to find a plugin or setting that allows me to play .rm files...help. |

Nope, Winamp does not play Real Player files by defauly. Because Real is very protected of their formats and don't let others play them.
But there are ways arounf this. See the following link. http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....id=155680#Real |

It's a seperate program. Tara is a Winamp plug-in.

1. Uninstall RealPlayer
2. Install RealAlternative (you need this for the Real Codecs) 3. Install the Tara plugin If the problem persists, provide basic system specs (cpu, mobo, soundcard, windows os, directx, internet connection type/speed), and a link to the stream. |

NO, DO NOT USE THE TARA PLUGIN
Do this, Install real alternative, then download the gabest real media splitter from http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/s...r_20050227.zip Once thats done, go to your winamp preferences Go to the plugins section and select INPUT Double click on the NULLSOFT DIRECTSHOW DECODER plugin to open its config options In the next window, add ;RM;RAM;RMV;RMA to the end of the listing of extensions, hit ok, hit close and restart winamp. Then you can use winamp's built in functionality to play real media files (the same works for the quicktime alternative, just add the MOV and QT extensions) Much better than that buggy tara plugin |

That method does not support streaming, though. Tara does. Plus, that splitter is included in Real Alternative already.

You don't need to install RealAlternative if RealPlayer is installed and you don't want to uninstall it.
You need one of RealPlayer or RealAlternative for the RealMedia codecs/engine. What you DO need to do is install either the Tara plugin for Winamp (for RA, RM, RAM, SMI, SMIL, RPM, RMX, RNX, RV, RMJ support), or the Gabest RealMediaSplitter (if not installing RealAlt) and use Metshrine's DirectShow plugin method instead (for local RA, RM support only, ie. no streams). Unless all you want to play are RA and RM files from your local hard drive(s) then we still recommend the Tara plugin method instead. |

If you have Real Player installed there is no need to install Real Alternative, the Tara plugin should be able to work with the Real Player codecs.
If Tara looks like it's playing but you get no sound : i) check your main volume control in Windows mixer ii) check Tara is not muted (right click the Tara video window for this option) iii)turn off 'Process audio through Winamp ... ' in Prefs > Input > Tara plugin > Config. UJ |

If you already have Real Player installed all you need to do is download the Tara Plugin to your desktop(or where ever) and double click to install.
Go to Winamp > Prefs > Input > DirectShow plugin > Config > and reset the 'Extention list' to default. Go to Winamp > Prefs > File Types and make sure that the Real file types are selected (RA, RM, RAM, etc.) Go to Winamp > Prefs > Input > Tara plugin > Config > turn off 'process audio through winamp ... ' Copy and paste the following into Winamp Menu > Play > URL rtsp://flow.hober.com/hober/hober_news.smi You should see a white bar with buffering info appear on you desktop somewhere. (If you need help moving this to a more convenient position then post back) When the stream has connected you will get a video window(faceplate) where you can check if you have mute turned on. See items (i) to (iii) in my previous post. UJ |

Do you get sound when you play other files in Winamp? (eg. a mp3 file)
I.e. is it a problem with RealPlayer files only, or do other file formats not play either? |

Tara is only for radio tranlations through Internet in real format. It requires preinstalled real player.
Real Alternative has the size which surpasses the size of Winamp copy, so it is not absolutely convinient. I'd recommend Direct Show RM utility (1,79 Mbytes), that doesn't require preinstalled real player (that is the hard version). |
