Beautiful Creature is Juliana's best work to-date. Moody, definitely!

Never heard of Gemma Hayes.

I listen to Pizzicato Five and Shonen Knife. And Cibo Matto are half Japanese! Not alot reaches the UK - it's probably the cultural barrier.

Anyone who's read a few of my posts in this forum already know my favorite diva. I have every song she's ever released to the public, plus 34 unpublished demos she recorded to a 4-track in her bedroom in 1992 and handed out to her friends, and 44 other songs comprising all the unreleased demos for her next-to-last album.

I like Liz as a singer, songwriter and musician overall, but looking only at strength-of-voice, my favorite is one that many people would roll their eyes at: LeAnn Rimes. I've yet to hear any voice in this world with as much force as hers. Listen to Sign Of Life, Damn and her rendition of How Do I Live for evidence of this.

I have an unexplainable attraction to the female voice, so well over half of the vocalists in my music collection are women. Other solo artist on my shelf that I really like are:

  • Chantal Kreviazuk
  • Vanessa Carlton
  • Avril Lavigne (OK, some of you will gag, but I like her!)
  • Shawn Colvin
  • Madonna
  • Natalie Imbruglia (also a model and commercial actress)
  • Michelle Branch
  • Jewel
  • Donna Lewis
  • Norah Jones
  • Faith Hill
  • Cher (no one else has mentioned the "Supergoddess of all Divas"???)
  • Paula Cole
  • Björk
  • Dido Armstrong
  • Bonnie Tyler
  • Suzy Bogguss
  • Milla Jovovich (also a movie actress and model)
  • Alanis Morissette
  • Nina Gordon (formerly with Veruca Salt)
  • Carol Decker (T'Pau)
  • Trisha Yearwood
  • Sarah McLachlan
  • Shania Twain (moving away from liking her so much, though...lyrics are too odd for my taste)
  • Tori Amos
  • Pam Tillis
  • Cyndi Lauper (I've really loved Cyndi's work since the mid-80s)
  • Boy George (umm, wait.....)
And female singers who have not (to my knowledge) done solo work, but who are still among my favorites are:
  • Shirley Manson (garbage)
  • Tina Weymouth (Tom Tom Club, Talking Heads)
  • Gwen Stefani (No Doubt)
  • Deborah Harry (Blondie)
  • Cindy Wilson, Kate Pierson (The B-52's)
  • Kelli Dayton (Sneaker Pimps)
  • Jennifer Finch, Suzi Gardner, Donita Sparks, Demetra Plakas (L7)
  • Courtney Love (Hole, practically her solo band I guess you could say)

I've heard it. It's HORRIBLE!!!!

Chris, you've omitted..

Julie Ruin
Juliana Hatfield
PJ Harvey
Julee Cruise

And there's no mention of Le Tigre or Bikini Kill? There's nothing like a bit of riot grrrl.

You've also clearly never heard any Curve.

I did forget PJ Harvey and Juliana Hatfield...they're among my favorites too, even though I don't have any of their albums right now (but I used to). Never heard of Julie Ruin or Julee Cruise...I'll have to check them out. Have to give Curve a listen too (I may have heard it before, can't remember).

Haven't heard of Le Tigre, but I do love Bikini Kill...and Bratmobile and Sleater-Kinney also.

You're missing 2 pieces of the puzzle - Julie Ruin was Kathleen Hanna's next band after Bikini Kill, and Le Tigre was the next band after that. Bikini Kill never died - it morphed.

I've just recently gotten into Kathleen Hanna's work...thanks for telling more about it, now I know what else to look for. For many years I've been a fan of female alternative and indie rock, but my Riot Grrrl addiction is more recent.

@spaceplay: When it was on TV, I wasn't really into Twin Peaks...I saw maybe two or three episodes. Nowadays my tastes are different, and I'd love to see it if it were ever on TV. What I should do is buy a DVD with the first few episodes and see if I get into it...I bet I would. I know it was a weird show, but the weirder the better...I'm a Lexx fan, after all.

Janis Joplin for a rocker, Lisa Loeb for a sex kitten song, nora jones when wasted trying to go to sleep, Madonna for a happy pop song and Doro Pesch for a metal tune and for gospel and R & B - well Aretha Franklin can't be touched.
