Clustering Question

Does anybody know the logic that's behind DNAS's clustering? What I mean is that I have two streams, one for 15 users, one for 5 and I can at any time see a various number of people on each. When someone connects to my stream, does DNAS just randomly send the connect-ee to one of the streams? Possible that it's load-balancing the stream? If so, that was a great idea.

Anyone?

Thanks!

Clarification

Sorry...

The two streams are actually one... the 15 seat stream is the main stream, the 5 seater is a relay for the 15. They're not seperate.

It's the Red Bull taking effect! FOW!

Clusters

The shoutcast playlist entry for a cluster should look something like this:

[playlist]
numberofentries=2
File1=http://ip.address.1:port
Title1=(#1 - x1/y1) Stream Description
Length1=-1
File2=http://ip.address.2:port
Title2=(#2 - x2/y2) Stream Description
Length2=-1
Version=2

The new info tracked by shoutcast yp is (#1 - x1/y1) where x1 is the current number of listeners and y1 is the maximum listeners for server #1. This info is updated every 30 seconds for clusters. The order of entries in the cluster list is such that x1/y1 < x2/y2, so the server with the fewest listeners in proportion to it's max is listed first. New listeners will connect to the server with the lowest utilization ratio.

Thanks for the info, looks like it was built for optimization on whichever stream is less weighted.

I appreciate it!

I've been trying to figure this out for some time- so does this only apply if you are running your own DNAS? I host with 2 seperate comapnies and would like to get some form of "roll-over" for the streams. I see people listing as clusters, but what about if the 2 server are not controlled by you? Can I install a dummy DNAS on my encoding PC and use the playlist as you describe?

Thanks
