Solace Amp SKin Concept

My friend Eric (sMee) and I have started this skin (its our first) and would like your feedback, though I must say he did most of the designing..:

We would like feedback on where the scrolling text should be and the counter, as well as any ideas about the skinning of the playlist etc.

And we would REALLY like feedback about what kind of font to use or any font suggestions in general.

Or really just anything you have to say. Thanks!

Great start! I like the design.. great!

Just play around with fonts till you find something that feels and looks good. And for the button placement, be creative

i love the design.
my suggestion is, i think it would look good if u put the song title and ect, in the middle part of the skin. since u have like 3 lines and the middle one is big, wu should put the ssong title there and u got 1 line at the top and bottom. Bottom maybe would be position of the song. and top maybe volume.

ahh good idea, in the test version i have done right now i have the song title etc scrolling in the bottom bar, and the sound analyzer in the middle, with the counter on the bottom...but if i move the sound analyzer to the top i can put the song title in the middle and those two bars as you suggested, good idea i will give it a shot.

thanks a lot

If you use bitmap fonts, you could really make the fonts intergrate in the skin. (its lots of work though)

i wont suggest u were the buttons go, i think u have an idea where they shuld go by now, i hope but i THINK u shuld make the orange screen be changable like the thing NEKO was working on so u can change colors or just add clors as addons. also PLEASE PLEASE make a nice SMALL and VERY SIMPLE like original winamp WINSHADE mode. i really think its the most or one of the most important things of the skin, becuz most people dont like when the skin takes up a lot of space, and winshade is just perfect, just put it in the title bar and it dosnt bother anything. make a simple and very nice one if u can. or maybe if 2 of them like i saw.
for exmple i love SCENE2 ACT 3 or whatever that skin is called but the winshade is too big

what is a bitmap font?

A Bitmapfont is basically a normal bitmapimage, which is divided in a tablelike grid. In every cell of that table you have to paint/draw one letter, with your graphicsprogram, as you like. But beware of the right order of those letters. Use one bitmapfont.png-file in defaultskin as a pattern.

You can find the XML attributes of <bitmapfont>element here.

what is winshade?

Yes, you're right it is the established word for minimized version of your player or equalizer and so on.

..this is going to have interchangeable colors..

Yes, try to use <gammaset >/<gammagroup> for setting your colors, so everyone can change it to its preferences.

Plz let the chrom/amber design the default color - it looks quite good.

Keep on going and ..

quick opinion

ok i havent read every reply, but scanning through here is my opinion so far. I see you have the volume and the seek right next to each other. That can be rather confunsing sometimes. See that little swoosh in the lower left? IMHO that would be better as volume. I say omit one of those bars that is supposed to be volume. Also, color themes would be nice. Make CERTIAN that you put at least lightly the symbols for play/pause/stop/skip/etc. It is not very user friendly for people to memorize the buttons on a skin. also make sure you skin everything such as eq, playlist, thinger, etc. I see you are trying to make trays. very nice. And one personal thing that I might recommend is opacity/scaling. That really makes a skin to me. Being able to have it on top but still be able to see through it and stuff. in the top area, put shuffle, xfade, repeat, or possibly EQ and playlist. looks great so far! keep it up, and good luck!

ok yeah i agree with you on all except one thing) lol, i had actualy considered the sliver for the volume before but i didnt know how to do it, and to be honest i dont even how to make any volume bar...this is our first skin, and i dont know anything as far as coding..so i am completely learning here..

the thing i dont agree on is the shuffle repeat etc buttons, which i wanted to have on a small slideout menu similar to that on the "neptune" skin...heres a link to that skin:

neptune

as you can see in this latest image i am putting up..the slideout is on the bottom and the button for it is on the metal rim on the left..

heres the image:

Hey,
This skin looks like itis coming along great, I definently agree that the orange should be the default colour.
I would have to say that those play/stop/back/next buttons need some labels, not only will it make it easier to use but it will make the skin look more complete.
I like the idea of the draw with the crossfade/shuff/repeat on it, perhaps you could have a similar draw somewhere else for the EQL?

The only bad thing I can say about it is that it looks too incomplete since there are no lables or anything.
Anyhow, keep going, good job =)

np, just giving you an example =)

the LCD font is called LCD and you can find it on http://www.thewebmachine.com downloads page. You will prolly need to make it a bmp font so that it retains the quality.
Good luck =)

however i do still want to have the sound analyzer in there, so the song info ticker will probably stay where i had it and the sound analyzer stay in the middle..as soon as i figure out how to make it not look crappy

here it is:

my next thought is, the smaller metal circle on the left rim of the skin..i want that to somehow change the color of the skin, by either taking the user to a theme menu, or by bringing up some kinda of hue saturation thing or something hehe...that would be cool

anyone know if this can be done?
