The "Update your old skins" thread

I'm making this thread to encourage you to take a look at your old skins, in the hope that you'll be inspired to breathe new life into them. Here are a couple examples of my successes with updating old skins:

Also, skins you never finished might come out great if you take a fresh look at them:

And this one is just for fun:

Click for massive damage. I mean animated gif comparison

Hopefully this will give some inspiration to some of you once-skinners-now-lurkers reading the forums ;)

I'm more into updating my old classic skins and turning them into modern versions, or as it seems to be these days, making a modern and classic version at the same time...

/back to work..

Trying to say something there, buddy? I haven't done anything resembling a skin in quite some time.

I certainly wasn't singling you out, if that's what you're getting at. The point is, this forum used to be full of people making skins, and now it's largely devoid of people making skins.

Anyway, I think I may have accidentally started on your second suggestion there, Luigi. Taking an unfinished skin and doing it in a different way that will allow me to actually finish it. We'll see if I do, though.

Think there is any future life for this old relic? I drug it out, darkened it a bit and did a little color matching and it looked better than I had remembered. Not a grand skin but hysterical... eh, I mean historical. I didn`t tinker with it too much so as to keep the original integrity of the skin.
Has a neat "readme"
Should I publish it for old times sake? Actually it`s not entirely mine of course, but I did sort of instigate it.
What do you think?

You do, of course, mean burn it to CD (for posterity, maybe put it in a museum or something).
There is a "Jones" in the Readme so I guess you are guilty also! The parts have always been a great mystery. Have no idea which part was yours.

I remember that monstrosity. I did the playlist. Speaking of which, who the hell changed the pledit.txt background to bright purple? it was supposed to be dark, like the rest of the background. As if that skin wasn't atrocious enough.

Maybe Jones didn't make any parts of it. Maybe someone just really hated him and put his name in the readme.txt themselves, just to be cruel. Some people can really be sick.

Sorry I screwed the playlist and BG up while playing around with it but the BG pledit color on my final copy of the skin didn`t seem to fit. (see attached ss from my, downloaded, original?, saved version.)
The messed-up pledit will not be saved. I thought the overall appearance looked better with the gamma lowered slightly.

Yes, I fully support you turning the gamma down on that skin. I think down to about -100 should do it.

Frankly, when I saw that screenshot, I thought, "I don't remember it being that dark." I don't think the colors need any changing. That said, maybe we should get some titlebar buttons on there! Heh.

Yeah, it's quite a bit too dark right now, perhaps turn up the brightness and then adjust the contrast so that the components are brighter but the background stays dark...

I`m not going to do anything with this except keep my original wsz file. I`m not sure if this was the final version or not. If anyone wants to do anything with it it`s fine with me.
I tried to attach a copy of the wsz file but it was too large to post and I don`t have a host site. If anyone wants a copy PM or email me.

Cheers...

I think, looking at it and coupled with my comments in the read me about 'my part being ripped off an old skin of mine' that I did the Gen Frame, that would make sense as my comments seem to be almost the last one in the readme and at the time the gen and video frames were quite new..

Besides which the Gen title bar looks just like the one off my DukSide skin....

It took 21 skinners to create that ba-bee back in 2002!

Was just reading some of the old posts in the evolution of it. Like looking into a time capsule...

Is it actually published anywhere? I could have sworn it used to be on 1001skins.com, but it seems gone now. Couldn't find it on this site either.

I don`t remember it being published anywhere. The skin I have was downloaded directly from the thread, way back when? So I am just presuming it was the final version.

That was around the time the "old gang" seem to start breaking up.

Coincidence?

Well, this thread got derailed and then died.
If I started a "remake on of your old skins" contest, would people enter? I'd allow for classic-to-modern, or classic-to-classic remakes, and judge based on the "most improved" while still retaining the original's concept... would anyone be interested?

Not I

I don't have a lot of the psd's for my old old skins, the ones that could probably benefit most for a make over, most lost in a hard drive crash a few years back, the ones I do have I think are pretty ok as they are so wouldn't be interested in re-working them, and the ones I wanted to re-work into modern skins have already been done for me as well.

Sorry I hijacked your thread, Luigi.

Getting back to remaking old skins; in my case, usually, when I finish one I basically lose all interest in it except to fix bugs. I have found that I can make more progress by starting afresh with a new idea. Seems I can only go so far with one and anything beyond that starts to lessen the overall quality rather than improve it.
Your 'contest" idea sounds good, though. Would be great to see more interest stirred up in skinning, especially regarding increased posts in this forum and recruiting new skinners.

I suppose I could make a Xion skin as a "proof of concept" to convince a coder to port it to Winamp... I might try that with my DoTT modern skin after I finish this one.

Still agree with Psycho, I have some sort of brand loyalty from using Winamp for so long.
