play a 5.1 file might help. cd's(and anything generated from a cd) are nearly always 2.0.

sacd's and dvd's are usually 5.1 but can be 2.0 aswell.

playing a standard cd in 5.1 is pointless, makes you loose sound quality, might sound louder because of the middle speaker. There is a loss of definition and its not how cd's are meant to be listened to.

Try the KB 5.1 output plugin (in the plugins section).

Note: you must set it up properly in the config first!

There is a ac3-filter for winamp with that you can listen to ac3- and dts-files (actually it's enough to rename your 5.1.wav files to *.dts or *.ac3).

Sorry, but you can't play SACD's or audioDvd's with Winamp.
Instead I use MPC combinet with the AC3-Filter, unhappily for Winamp that works
