there is an optional settings the "VBR Q', stating 0 (zero) as HIGH and 9 as LOW.
what is this setting for? detailed explanation of this option.

google did not yield anything about this option

Hi sireast,

There are tons of info on the net about the LAME MP3 Encoder specs. This option has to do with scale factors and noise shaping (very technical stuff). Best you search again for details (that require associated fundamental knowledge to understand), but to summarize:

-q qual
0 <= qual <= 9

Bitrate is of course the main influence on quality. The higher
the bitrate, the higher the quality. But for a given bitrate,
there are a choice of algorithms to determine the best scale fac-
tors and huffman encoding (noise shaping).

-q 0:
use slowest & best possible version of all algorithms. -q 0 and
-q 1 are slow and may not produce significantly higher quality.

-q 2:
recommended. Same as -h.

-q 5:
default value. Good speed, reasonable quality.

-q 7:
same as -f. Very fast, ok quality. Psycho acoustics are used
for pre-echo & M/S, but no noise shaping is done.

-q 9:
disables almost all algorithms including psycho acoustics modeling. Poor qual-
ity.

I use CBR and -q1. -q0 is very slow but -q1 is fast enough, at least for my system.

Hi sireast,

For the same bit rate, a VBR file is smaller than a CBR file of the same song. If file size is an issue, use VBR.

CBR should provide higher quality, but depending on the kind of music and your equipment, you may not be able to hear the difference.

Experiment with the various options and settle on what best fits your needs as to sound quality and file size. Technically, an mp3 (at highest bit rate and best -q setting) can not match the quality of a loss-less format (like flac or wavpack) because the format (lossy) does not capture all of the frequencies in the original music. But again, you (and most people) may not be able to hear the difference.

same bitrate? how can they be the same?

also, while today its really no longer an issue, occasionally I do run across this or that which doesn't handle VBR as well as a CBR. and its only in more recent LAME vers that the same encoding process was applied to both types. don't ask for more info b/c I forget the details, but in earlier LAMEs the process for encoding VBR was different (and lesser) than the CBR process, quality-wise speaking. my understanding is that they have since fixed that in newer vers, but I don't know which exactly.

I think you know what I was saying.

But to be clearer for the OP, I should have said the same maximum bit rate. Such as VBR 320 vs CBR 320.

There are all kinds of technical arguments, one way or another. Bottom line, the beauty is in what one hears.
