Wifi Browser

I'm looking for something that I can carry around with me and use to browse the web through my school's wifi connection.

When I'm on site troubleshooting a problem, sometimes I just need to quickly look something up and it would be great to not have to lug out a laptop for that purpose.

I've looked at things like the iphone, but I don't need a phone. I have one. I don't want to pay extra for service either, just let me browse the web.

If it were something that I could pull up an ssh shell with, well that would be amazing, but I'd buy something without that if it doesn't exist.

Suggestions?

How about a Nokia N800.
(No, it's not a phone.)

Although the N810 was just announced too.

Their predecessor the Nokia 770 is available really cheap now, so depending on your requirements that might do. Both versions run on Linux so you can install an SSH shell on it.

Also the iPod Touch has the same internet capabilities as the iPhone, with only Wifi.

Palm TX and the Peperpad 3 would do the job, peperpad would better as it has flash and runs linux out of the box.

Is Opera on DS actually any good? I've not heard the greatest accounts of it.

I'm not sure. I'm deciding between that and the N800. Any chance of ssh on the DS, btw?

It's my birthday in a week and a half. I turn 21! I may buy one of these as my gift to myself.

Do you think there is much call for ssh from your average DS user?

If you have a DS that can run homebrew then DSlinux has one, I haven't tried it out though.

(I hit 21 next friday.)

Homebrew on DS is an experience to say the least, I've had some great success with some apps and some total disasters with others.

But, best not talk about the ever so slightly dodgy hardware required to even get that far

It doesn't replace a laptop or desktop computer by no means but it's good just to check mail or any other news sites.

I've got a Palm T|X that I use once in a while to get online. It's not something I would use to surf with on a regular basis simply because of its limitations, but it's great if you need it every now and then. I simply use the crappy browser that comes installed on it. Great little device.

What about using a PSP to browse the internet and view email?

Because then he'd have to buy a Sony product, and that would loose him -500 street cred points with his friends...

That and he'd probably have to exchage it like 10 times as it gets one different fault after another.

As much as I hate Sony, the amount of homebrew mods available for the PSP make it quite a nifty tool for doing everything from playing N64 games to watching Youtube Vids to listening to SHOUTcast to controlling your TV.

Playing Nintendo games on a Sony product is a sin so heinous that hell itself isn't punishment enough.

Thing is, I already have a mobile phone with Opera Mini on it that I can do that on. The browsers on the Nokia series and the new Apple things are pretty much full-featured, which has more of an appeal.

I can't help it; I'm an emulation freak. I won't stop until I can play Galaga on my Microwave.

But the DS Lite + Opera is a hell of alot cheaper than anything else.
