Echo/reverb problem

Okay, so got a fun problem. when i listen to music in winamp on my new XP machine it has a horrible echo/reverb thing goin down. When i tried to listen to it in Media Player it did the same thing, but i just went to the otions in media player and turned off the SRS effects, which was by default set to echo, and everything sounded beautifull. But i wanna use winamp dammit! I checked my soundcard settings, and i have no wierd 3d sound settings or nothin like that. I tried a few winamp plug-ins to attempt to eliminate the reverb, and i tried the winamp3 beta and it's still soundin' rotten... someone please help me!!

have tried

sound card is brand new, but checked for a new driver anyway, like i said initially it plays fine in widows media player so i dobt it's a hardware issue. Oh, and i have no plugins, and the ones i did try only made the echo worse.

Try this update patch:
Winamp 2.78 Update
(Updates both out_wave & out_ds plugins to peter's (PP) versions, also updates in_midi.dll & in_wave.dll to new pre v2.79 versions)

Further details: (READ THIS FIRST)
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=68811

Then switch to DirectSound Output in Winamp Prefs -> Output.
This will utilize DirectX drivers to process the audio, like WMP.

If the problem persists, then provide some sys specs, especially:
Soundcard, motherboard, Windows OS, DirectX version (start -> run -> dxdiag)

Also check in Windows Volume Control -> Advanced
Make sure no reverb/3d effects are enabled.

Otherwise, it's got to be a soundcard effects setting, or a DSP Plugin in Winamp, or a freaky EQ setting, or borked soundcard drivers.
