Wander over to di.fm's forum. That would be a good place to begin a quest such as yours.

The search for the ultimate signature continues apace. I have journeyed from the peaks of Nepal to the depths of oceanic trenches. I have crossed deserts, jungles, swamps, savannas, steppes and frozen wastelands. I have consulted with seers, swamis, sages, scholars and savants. The peregrination proceeds purposefully.

after listening to the samples I don't think DI will be a great place for you to look as this stuff isn't really electronic in any way but more acoustic chill rock type stuff. Might want to check out Jack Johnson, Mogwai, or Death Cab for Cutie.

It's not really my genre so someone else might be able to offer better advice.

Devendra Banhart comes to mind. He's got the same sort of understated quietness as Iron and Wine do, a lot of the time, although with quite a different sound.

I just clicked the Launch Streaming Audio Player link at the top of their website, and they sound to me more like Crosby Stills Nash & Young (but not as good), or even Barclay James Harvest.

I wouldn't go that as far as Barclay James Harvest, only tried tracks 1-3 though. Track 2 reminds me of that Steve Wynne-produced late 80s George Harrison album.

Yeah, maybe you're right there. I only ever liked a couple of BHJ tracks anyway (back in the day, and probably not now, except for maybe "Hymn"), so maybe I was thinking of those. Though it does all sound like a kinda 70's-ish style to me.

btw, it was track 3 which reminded of some old BJH track, heh, whereas tracks 1+2 were the CSNY'ish ones. And yeah, I only listened to the first 3 as well.

mmm, interesting list... some pretty decent-ish stuff in there actually.

[edit] man, i must've edited this post about 10 times, lol [/edit]

                            try Kitaro
i never made it past track 3 on his cd's , by that time i'm deep asleep.

Kitaro makes traditional Japanes music on synths.

Most of the bands on that list are ones I prefer to Iron and Wine. They mix well, especially if like me you find it hard to listen to a lot of Iron & Wine in a sitting.

Somebody told me that Iron & Wine's cover of the Postal Service's Some Great Heights has been used in a tv advertisement. Very strange, that. More power to him I guess, as he's got a family to feed.
