Over the road

Tomorrow evening I leave for an 8 week over the road trip.

I will be heading south to Albuquerque where we will stay for a night then we head out to LA then northern California then up to Washington state. I don't remember any of the details or where we are going after Washington state other than I know we will be going through Georgia and up to Illinois.

I am told that this 8 week trip will be roughly fifteen thousand miles. I just hope I can stay awake and keep up with the convoy.

That's a lot of time to spend in a car. I think you will be mighty sick of driving. I've done some road tripping and 300 miles a day is a pretty cool way to see the country, but I don't know if you're gonna like to average that for 48 days.

I really am getting to be an old dude. I want an air plane ride. A motel with a sauna, a jacuzzi and a swimming pool. Roughing it is having to make my own drink.

Screw that bike hammering my ass 1300 miles to Sturgis for a portapotty and a campground shower.

A cab to the Holiday Inn is fine. There's a place in Greenwich Village called the Larchmont which I stayed at once. It was cheap, clean and had some character.

Going here the coming long weekend with the 4 year old granddaughter. Staying at the local Super 8.

Teddy Bear Specials are really a variation on our popular "Country Dinner" theme trips and are good for all ages. These diesel-powered trips last five and one-half hours and include a full course Alberta roast beef buffet, entertainment, and an awful good chance of a train robbery. The only real differences between these trips and a "Country Dinner" are the very large number of children on board and entertainment is directed at the children, usually clowns and children's sing-along. Adults are generally entertained by watching the children being entertained.
There is one-half hour at the end of the Big Valley stop to allow for a teddy bear promenade involving the children and their bears. Everyone gets a prize.

She does not know about the train. She likes trains, like her Opa. It's going to be a great weekend.

Super 8 is sorta like McDonalds. It ain't great, but you knew that going in Consistently meh. No surprises.

We have the Mt. Hood railroad here, which is kinda the same idea. I've done it a couple times. Hood River has some excellent windsurfing too, which has made a good combination. For that trip, I'd pick the Super 8 too.

The Plaza had a great tradition of High Tea on Sundays. I've never stayed over at The Plaza or Pierre. I would have liked to just once. Had a Candlelight Din-Din and gone shopping at Bloomies. If I win a gabillion dollars I might do that...and go to Paris and sit in a sidewalk cafe.

The problem with other countries is that there are too many foreigners . If I were to pick, it wouldn't be Paris. Budapest. Hungarians are a lot more gregarious than the French. It's a better mix for Americans I think.

Not many pictures to be had. All the driving I am doing is at night. I'm not cooped up in a car. I am driving a tour bus hauling around drum corps kids. Our group has 4 busses 2 semis 2 vans and a gmc yukon.

I am in Beaverton Oregon right now. I should be asleep.

Take pics anyway - I used to tour with a DCI drum corps band as a baritone player when I was a lot younger. It was quite fun.

I did a bus tour earlier this summer called "R.I.D.E." (rediscovering Iowa's diverse education) - toured 13 Northeastern Iowa colleges/universities with a bunch of other school counselors so that I have a better idea what programs they offer when advising students in college choices.

As far as my own driving, I have gone from Iowa to PA (one 900 mile day), then back and forth from PA to OH a lot. I'll drive to New Jersey soon too for some family stuff. Eventually I'll have to drive back to IA (another single 900 mile day).

Very true. I have been pumping music and GPS directions through my bluetooth.


I will post more pictures as I take them. Not many opportunities for photos because I wake up at 6:00 PM and we are usually on the road by 11:00 PM we drive for 3 - 10 hours and then it's right to bed to sleep the day away. We don't really have many chances to sight see. Most of the pictures I have are of the corps and I'm not posting pictures of them.
