When running dxdia (Microsoft DirectX troubleshooting program), everything looks good. It would be nice if It would be nice if I could attach .pdf pix of error and DirectX info

You need to download and install DirectX 9.0
And if you would like to upload a file there is a Manage Attachments button below the edit window.

no support for m4a/aac inW10

I had exactly the same problem when I upgraded Winamp to the latest version. I upgraded because it doesn't play my .m4a files using the aac codec. I read all the threads related to this issue but to no avail.

I don't see how I can downgrade to version 9 of DirectX without causing new problems in Windows 10.

After 20 years of using Winamp, I regret the app is no longer actively supported.

you dont downgrade to direct x 9.0, you install the redistributables which include extensions that is missing in x10+

i believe if someone installs any necessary directx redistributables they don't have, and then installs 5.666, and then installs 5.8 over top, they will have no problems with AAC m4a's or other file/codec types.

source code is available

I think all these special installation operations, that are way too complex for me to understand, shouldn't be necessary as all the software is already installed. Potplayer (my main video player), VLC Media Player and even Windows Media Player all play these m4a/aac files without any problems.

The source code of Potplayer (https://sourceforge.net/projects/potplayer/) and VLC Media Player (https://sourceforge.net/projects/vlc/) are available.

maybe so, but thats the way it is for the moment with winamp.

and honestly, doing what i said to do isn't some super heavy technical hurdle. its pretty easy actually.

(and i'm not even sure the directx part is necessary)

can u post an example AAC file that won't play? i want to try it.

i went to:

https://y2mate.com/

and put in a utube song and picked the audio tab, and the m4a option. it opened into the browser and started playing as audio only in the browser, but i clicked the 3 button icon and was able to download as videoplayback.m4a

it did NOT play in my winamp.

it DID play in my VLC.

mp3tag shows no tags and says its a mpeg-4 AAC.

mediainfo says its a AAC LC.

i picked the mp3 option, and that file PLAYED in winamp.

my guess is there is something wrong with the m4a container or file header y2mate creates, that winamp rejects, but that VLC forgives. however, i suppose it is possible winamp has a bigger problem with AAC LC in m4a container files, but i think more people would be posting such if true.

I suppose Winamp doesn't recognise the format and skips it while the three other players I found on my PC do recognise the format.

I found a fourth player, Groove Music, on my PC that plays the files without any issues.

Therefore I think it's not a problem with the file format itself but with the way Winamp looks at the files.

I think winamp, normally speaking, can play m4a AAC LC files. I think it rejects these ones created by a website bc they probably have some issue that winamp treats more strictly than other, more forgiving players.

I could be wrong, but if winamp were just rejecting ALL m4a AAC LC files, I think more people would be posting about it.

That thread is fairly interesting. I personally don't use lossy m4a and try to avoid em in my collection but its gtk their is a certain variety that winamp just won't do.

It does beg the question tho, why not? Meaning, why would winamp seemingly choose to be the only music player to reject such files?

Most likely because of how new it is (~2012), and never got a license to include it.

This is why I stick to mp3 when it comes to lossy files, you can almost guarantee not to have issues playing it than.

dash iso6/mp41 container format not supported

I've been examining the Winamp problem in more detail and I can confirm the findings in the other thread, thanks to PotPlayer's detailed format information.

General
...
Format : dash
Codec ID : dash (iso6/mp41)
...
Overall bit rate : 127 kb/s
...

Audio
ID : 1
Format : AAC
Format/Info : Advanced Audio Codec
Format profile : LC
Codec ID : 40
...
Bit rate : 126 kb/s
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Channel positions : Front: L R
Sampling rate : 44.1 kHz
Frame rate : 43.066 FPS (1024 spf)
Compression mode : Lossy
...

Winamp supports the AAC/LC codec but it does not support the general Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP iso6/mp41 (container) format. The evidence is that it can play mp4 files with the same audio format and codec (Advanced Audio Codec / LC format with codec ID 40). In this case the container is formatted according to the MPEG-4 BASE Media / Version 2 with codec ID isom/mp42.

The mp4 files have the following general and audio formats:

General
...
Format : MPEG-4
Format profile : Base Media / Version 2
Codec ID : mp42 (isom/mp42)
...
Overall bit rate mode : Variable
Overall bit rate : 358 kb/s
...

Video
...

Audio
ID : 2
Format : AAC
Format/Info : Advanced Audio Codec
Format profile : LC
Codec ID : 40
...
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 96.0 kb/s
Maximum bit rate : 103 kb/s
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Channel positions : Front: L R
Sampling rate : 44.1 kHz
Frame rate : 43.066 FPS (1024 spf)
Compression mode : Lossy
Stream size : 5.37 MiB (27%)
Title : IsoMedia File Produced by Google, 5-11-2011
...

Since all the media players I could find on my PC support DASH I think it would be wise to add it to Winamp as well.

DASH support on other browsers & operating systems is available via Media Source Extensions (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynami...ming_over_HTTP).

I would note a few things...

First, dash is meant for streaming, not creating local standalone files that some website rips from utube. Those sites should not output the files as dash files. It's at best inappropriate and imo, lazy on their part.

Second idk if windows media foundation:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Foundation

Supports dash or not, I know tho that winamp often relies on it.

Finally I agree that winamp should support dash, esp since it can be streamed, and other apps do either way, but I fear winamp is dead in the water for now.
