This guy has a few words on both.

I've never paid attention to what triple sec I put into a drink, to be quite honest.

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

Triple Sec sucks. Use Gran Marinier in any recipe that calls for it. If you ordered a top shelf Margarita in a ritsy bar, you'd get GM. Get Patron tequila.

No one would argue about the substitution, even if they can tolerate Triple Sec.

If you must use Triple Sec, it probably doesn't matter what kind.

The two most famous in Europe would be Cointreau and Grand Marnier, about equal.

Try your hand at Crêpes Suzette if you have a bottle handy.

Ah... Long Islands... Mmmmm

fill that 20oz glass up with 2/3rds of ice

1 shot of:
Triple Sec
Absolute
Jose Quervo
Capt Morgan
and any decent Gin (will do)

a splash of lemon juice and top it off with cola.

Needs more moo-cows.

Cointreau. Worth the extra money if you are actually making drinks to taste such as a common cosmopolitan or long island for the ladies. [I have not tried Gran Marinier (or I did and forgot), so I can't comment on whether it's good or not.]

Cheap triple sec is very syrupy and disgustingly sweet, making you feel sick even to taste it straight. I made the mistake of buying cheap popular brand triple sec (DeKuyper)a long time ago, and I ended up giving the bottle away at a party because it was bad enough that I didn't want to allow anyone to drink anything from my bar with it.

If you feel Cointreau is too expensive, get a drink recipe that doesn't include any kind of orange liqueur. My thoughts are if you can't make it right, don't make it at all, and either wait until the money is saved enough to get it or try another drink that has a lower total cost when still using good stuff.

From loving- long -island.com
Original
1 part Gin
1 part Rum
1 part Tequila
1 part Triple Sec
1 part Vodka
1 ½ parts Sour mix
A little Coca-Cola for color
Mix ingredients with ice in a Collins glass then transfer to shaker. Shake once or twice then pour back into glass. Garnish with lemon then brace yourself.
And I'm loving Ujay's Idea for Crêpes Suzette.
