All Americans are considered Yankees, hence us brits call you "yanks".

Americans don't call all other Americans Yankees. I always thought it was a term for those living in New England...

New Englanders are considered "damn yankees." Anyone in the US that doesn't live in "the south" is considered a "yankee" by true southerners. I don't consider myself a true southerner, but I do live down here, so I figured I wasn't too far out of line. :P

If you're in Canada, they call you a yank. The proper response is "Yank this buddy".

I've never called anybody a Yankee and I'm Southern born & raised. And I do consider myself a Southerner, although the phrase means something completely different to a Northerner than it does to me. To me it's a music pride thing.

Besides the Velvet Underground, surf intrumentals, polka and klezmer, what else has the rest of the country contributed that didn't originate down here?

Ah yes, the all too common cat piss smell of a meth lab means it's Christmas in the Pacific Northwest.

If you'd like some meth, come to Hillsboro, Oregon or most Northwest cities. Someone will be a long in minutes to take your order for whatever illicit drugs, prostitution or other brain damage you may require.

Now I can't get any damn Sudafed and sometimes nothing else works good. That's the extent of the effectiveness of law enforcement. I can't get my usual cold pills

Other than that, Man, they're are a lot of fried psycho tweakers round these parts......

Some side effect of crank is identity theft. You can be real sorry if you didn't pick up your mail around here.

They also like to kill themselves a lot, so that's not to uncommon to hear about......

Two immensely important music artists born and raised in the Pacific northwest:

...and when was music even mentioned in the thread? We went from meth, to yankees to music? How th-
Damn Winamp forums.

As long as we're randomly changing the subject, let's talk about something more interesting... like blue cheese.

Yes, I could go for some fine blue cheese about now.

Ooh, cheese goes good with crackers.

Well, the use of the word yankee brought up regional identity sooo I gave my 2¢. I don't see anything in the article about meth. ;-)

Okay. San Francisco sound --> Jeffereson airplane, the Dead, quicksilver, Steve miller, Santana, Frank Zappa,
Merle haggard, Prince...

Too easy a question. the south has produces a shit-load of great music, the blues, early jazz, country (though you could argue sucessfully all of that really came from Scots and Irish immigrants and Africans), but the rich cornocopia of american music has come from all over hell and gone with each region adding its $.02. witness chicago blues and West coast blues mixing urban culture with the immigrants from the south who moved for work in teh 1930's and 1940's. Each region put its stamp on the original art form.

I agree each region put its stamp on. What I'm talking about is the place where these forms came together. People think that sacred & secular music were kept apart, and black and white music were kept apart, but the further you dig into it you'll see a lot of crossover. In a folk way it was on the level of the cultural exchanges in port cities and land trading routes during the middle ages. It followed the railways into the North, then to the rest of the country through radio & tv.

It gives me the feeling that I'm contributing to something with a history when I make up my own songs. That's kind of the touchy-feely answer there. Maybe at the root of it it's an indier-than-thou thing. Dunno, it's very late.

Don't forget Detroit techno!

At least it's better than Gabber.

Forget techno, that's music made by plumbers. When one thinks of Detroit, it's Motown.

The best thing about Gabber is that when people dance to it, they look like they're shivering while moving in slow motion. It is simply too fast.

Can't they just dance in half-time?
