Back to a game

I was trying to think of a game that is near and dear to my heart, and I relized that I had neglected one of my favorite games - Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Granted it is on Gameboy, but it would be fun to make a grayscale skin anyway. Here's the initial layout I have so far. Suggestions? Things you would like to see for buttons, etc? . . .

that's a funny avatar jj.

I loved the old zelda games, but I think there's already at least one really good 2D zelda skin. So it's gonna be hard to do something new - there's quite a high standard in games skin like this. But there are loads of opportunities for cool buttons and animations (I'm reminded of Duk's Harvest Moon skin, definately in my top 5).

You should go for it though . I've never seen a greyscale one.

ARGH... me accidentally typed räpe.tk (w/o the umlaut) -- I don't recommend you try it.

Not being a connoisseur of platform games (I've only ever had a N64 and some pretty pants games), I dunno if my comments are correct. However, it looks a little (a lot, actually) grey!

Quick skin pic update. No major changes yet. I want to make it look as much like an actual game screen as possible. Yeah, I know there have been some kick-ass 2D skins like this. Luigi Hann is about five times as good as me at these sort of things I have learned some new techniques since I've made my last game skin though, so it could be ok.

Thanks for noticing the avatar. I'm trying to decide what to write in the back ground, and where.

Actually didn't it have that nausea inducing LCD grey-green in the background?

Here's a little update. My plans are Link falling down the hole for volume slider, and those blobs hopping around for eq animation. And yes Xerxes, the original Gameboy was on a hideous greenish background that caused much pain and suffering. I decided to use more pleasant shades of grey for the skin - to prevent the viewer (and my skin ratings for that matter) from suffering. Alright, time for an ECE test . . .

looking good

but those EQ sliders don't fit
IIRC there was some sort of dog-thing on a chain-thing in the swamps or something in the begining...maybe you could use those. (either that or I don't remember correctly, in which case you should just ignore this post)

GAAAAHHHHHHHhhhhhhh!!! Just my luck! I have to follow up a Luigi Hann skin . . . oh well, I don't think his new version looks as good. At least it's not as good as his Link to the Past or TetrisAmp . . . man, those things still scare me. Anyway, don't remember any dog-on-chain things, but I'll check Maybe you're thinking about the biting black ball thing that I have in the lower left of my skin - it's called a Bow Wow, so it would make sense

First of all, I wouldn't go too overboard in comparing your Zelda skin with Luigi's. Although they share the same subject, graphically the two are quite different. I like your idea to go black and grey with this one. Green and grey may be more accurate, but then it would probably look like the million LCD skins out there...

I think using "Bow Wows" for Eq sliders would be superkeen. You could even animate the heads and chains for a bit of realism. I'm not sure about the playstacks though. There are more objects than there are buttons, which could send the user into a futile fit of misclicks.

Does the fisherman move up and down in the clutterbar? That would be so, so cool.

Looks good so far. BTW, if I hadn't been so busy at the time, I would have stopped by and complimented you on your innovative Paint skin. I quite enjoy it (moreso than the actual program)

Thanks for the EQ suggestion, I think the bow wows work pretty well I'm trying to think of something that they can be snapping at. Yeah, I know about the playlist thing. My problem is that I try to make the skin too much like the game - you know, they would always put hearts and chests in places where they were hard to get, stuf like that. I'll fix it though . . . does the shuffle look ok? (it's the patch of darker grass) Any comments on skin or new avatar? . . .

to make an animated cursor, use microangelo (you'll have to google it) and rename it to .cur

Is there something else besides microangelo you can use to make animated cursors? Something like free or cheaper.

You can also make animated cursors using Animation Shop that comes with Paint Shop. You can't control hot spot, but you can find an animated gif from the game and convert it over. It has to be exactly 32x32

e-raser's sig is 65 kb. Theoretically, it should take you a little more than a second to load on 56K.

Loving the skin. I thought using the blob guys as the EQ bars would be better... make an animation where they jump and blob all over the place.

I have this game. It confuzzles me...

Would it be so hard to make it Gameboy Colour colours?

If I'm not mistaken, 56K modems are 56 kilobits per second, while the sig is 64 kilobytes. 56 Kb/s = 7 KB/s, that's a little more than 9 seconds (neglecting headers and control data).

About the skin... it looks great keep the nice work

Yes Cleanup, I think blob animations would be good too. I think I will have the blobs running (or blobbing) away from the bow-wows, and suck back into the ground before they get bitten. I'll see how that works. Any suggestions as to the font? I think it's a little plain right now. I would prefer to leave the skin black and white though

for the numbers, use the snes zelda font for money, its classy and very zeldaish. as for the text bar, why not use the font that is in the game itself? cut and past screen shots. i did that for my yaXay skin. used the websites many buttong to creat a whole alphabit.
