Transparent image

This is a bit strange, I know; bear with me.

I am working on a game in visual basic. The problem is that I'm creating graphics for the game - characters, bushes, trees, etc. simply in paint. The problem is that when I load an image into the game it's still got the white border around the graphic (It's to be expected).

Is there any very simple (free) program that I can edit images with that I can specify transparent pixels with? As in: not any blending or alpha, but just pixels that dont show up (like a round button would actually look round on a form; you'd see the pixels behind the corners).

again, i know this is hard to understand. I'll give an example:

This is what it looks like:

this is the type of transparency I want:

Anything free (and as small as possible, so I can download it at school) that'l make a color (or region) transparent like that?

Where is GIMP?

There is no longer any zip archive with GIMP executables here. There are GIMP 2 (and 1.2.5) installers at http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net. The installers are created by Jernej Simoncic, so please ask him about problems with them. (I don't intend to distribute GIMP 2 executables myself, either as zip files or installers.)
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place...
