Cyber Bullying?

This subject has been getting attention lately and I was wondering what others thought?

Recently the subject was aired on one of our national television stations current affairs programmes 'Prime Time'. The topic was due to the fact that teenagers on networks such as Bebo and Myspace, (Used as examples only), were having nasty and concerted attacks made on there part of the service even to the point of publishing direct address/phone information of the targeted victim. They even interviewed the main owner of Bebo live on the programme and Miriam, (Interviewer - She's good ), she really grilled the guy, though in fairness he did defend there position from a good angle.

Because I run a similar kind of service (Or try to lol) I was kinda concerned about this because obviously I do allow younger users. I have one who runs an oc fan club who is 15[? I think]. I feel that if they are availing of my service then I am morally responcible that there time spent there should be a fun, full filling interaction.

So I added this into my terms of use under FAQ

Quote:
Important Serious Bit 2
(This one is very very serious!! Read Carefully!!)
***CYBER BULLYING***

Cyber Bullying is a problem that has been recieving a lot of attention in the mainstream media lately. BlogIreland.ie have looked at the problem and it is happening in a lot of places online.
An 'Anti - Cyber-Bullying Policy' will be actively enforced. A user may contact anti-bullying - at - blogireland.ie (Substitute the '@' symbol for '- at -'). Any and all complaints will be fully investigated. The perpetrator if it is proven will be reported to there relevant I.S.P. for follow on/up action by the Authorities. It is well to remember "BlogIreland.ie have access to everything that is published to the system, both off - line, (Except private drafts) and online.
A digitally 'Time Stamped and Dated' copy of the offending comments will be forwarded to the relevant Authority for action at their desire. The offender, if a member could possibly also face the disabling/deletion of there system.

**CYBER BULLYING - IT WON'T BE TOLERATED IN ANY FORM'. **

If you feel that this policy is to harsh then please find an alternative blog provider.
Is this to harsh a stance to take? I'm all for being fair but can't stand bullying or bullies at the best of times but I have to put personal feelings aside in this but obviously they will influence what I decide for the best for the system overall.

Was just looking for a more diverse view on it...

It's not too harsh. Private flamewars are as bad for a forum as public ones. Best to watch out for your users' well-being, & have a policy in place to collect the evidence & deal with it.

/edit I mean to say, personal flamewars are as bad as anonymous ones. Worse even.

Didn't Germany just pass a low that holds forum admins/owners responsible for any bullying that goes on in their boards?

I don't know - haven't seen anything on it my self but would appreciate a link if you find it? I know there talking or trying to envolope it under the existing anti bulling campaigns....

Mainly targeting schools etc and the two major ones I mentioned there do have policies in place but are they just to big? or not have enough staff (Bebo have indicated they were taking on more people to deal with the problem)..

Here's an article about moderator liability from the Register.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/04..._for_comments/

/edit It looks like this has more to do with distributing tools for vandalism and disruption of service than bullying.

My cousin is an 8th grade teacher, and yes, cyber bullying is a big thing in the schools cause the kids bring online issues with them to class. Also, he firmly believes that myspace is evil and would do the naked mole dance if it ever gets shut down.

You know me. There's no such thing as "too harsh".

I'd add something about "From on your ISP we can find out which school you attend, at which point we'll forward information on any violations to your school administrators for further action against you."

I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash.

As an old guy with no kids I feel lost here. Not that I haven't seen flame wars on BBS's and older style forums but I fail to understand why MySpace is evil?
Someone direct me to some further in depth debate please?

I remember that the sonique kids took things pretty far when we had Falcon4 here. Kid was like 12 but they went so far as to track down his home phone and started harassing his whole family and shit.

We've been attacked by so many forums, it's intolerably hilarious.

Sonique had nothing on Somethingawful's attack while Grumpycunt didn't even pose a challenge.

I usually care less, but on an important document such as your terms of use, use the right spelling of their, there, and they're.

Otherwise I fully support you.

Their = belonging to them
There = not here
They're = They are

Don't forget to live before you die.

Something to do with a fickle finger.

I think intimidation is neccesary at certain points, but those Sonique guys were dicks about it. The most I ever did was call him on his bullshit and bully him a bit. I didn't take it to the level of firebombing his life. I just didn't like him and felt justified. I think some bullying is neccesary to get people to adhere to basic etiquette of posting, and maybe in that way Chev is right, I was more justified than I thought but to call a motherfuckers parents and bitch him out to them, post his address and mapquest directions to get to his house? That's too far, man.
