Web Hosting

Last month, my forums went through 17gigs of traffic and shot our account over. I'm going to need some hosting for the forums alone. I'm considering 1and1.com but is there any suggestions that are better and cheap for me?

Thanks,
Tucker

ps: To any of our forum users, the forums are back up.

How on earth does a forum that has 85 users manage to rack up 17gb worth of data transfer?

That is an awful lot of text to serve

Hacker abuse?

17GB of text is... mind boggling. That is possibly comparable to the entire literary works of humanity stored as flat text... at least ~16.9GB more than the complete works of Shakespeare anyway...

I ran a similar sized forum some time back , serving up pretty much plain text + forum graphics and at the worst it peaked one month at around 1gb of transfer.

17gb is just outstanding!

And make sure you aren't doing anything silly, like hosting avatars or signatures. And disable hot linking for people who upload attachments.

So right now are the forums on onthedust, or smeggle's site?

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

Right now they are on onthedust, but at the top of the hour we're disabling the board.

Dont' know when we'll be back up but it should be anywhere from 1-48 hours, keep checking forums.themsrliveshow.com to see if it'll come up or not.

[edit]I've been told that 17gigs was in a week which doesn't seem possible[/edit]

just moving the existing board over? Now's a great chance to upgrade or make something entirely different.

Yeah, it was a pain in the but. I had to re-do the whole site pointing php and other stuff on that server to my broadcast pc down here. You would be proud mikm, i set up xampp by myself and got a fresh copy of phpbb2 on there and all my other php stuff

If it was easy to upgrade PHPBB to it I might be intrested, although, phpbb is the only thing i've used and mine is pretty well modded.
