Animated wallpaper...

I'm thinking more like how the background is in HL2 when you open it up(without the console enabled) only as a wallpaper type of thing... Possible? Links?

I actually do want to use one HL2 "menu scene" for this just for kicks.

There is no sig.

So what you're really looking for is real-time 3D rendered wallpaper, not animated wallpaper? I've been looking for the same thing...

This is a sig of some nature.

Something like that yea. I didn't know what to call it and animated wallpaper is the first thing that came to mind. I'm guessing it doesn't exist yet?

There is no sig.

A screen-saver as a wallpaper, heh. Sounds like it would be ridiculously easy to implement, but I've never heard of it being done. ...In fact, it's getting harder and harder to find good screen-savers. The HL2 menu screen actually gave me the same idea, except not as a wallpaper. You'd think we'd have more than just pretty aquariums by now!

I have a similar request: icons on a desktop of more than one size! Why can't I have some small ones and big ones there at the same time?!

does not exist on windows, but on GNOME. you can simply click "stretch icon" there. Nice thing to have.

You might be able to use another shell to have different sized icons but then don't forget that all Windows icons are bitmaps and many only go up to 48x48 px (the default tiled size in XP). I seem to remember a screenshot on 4chan of something exactly like this.

What I want on linux is a desktop/explorer that will align icons to a grid exactly like Windows does. Gnome aligns columns and has variable row heights in its explorer (Nautilus is it?). If I recall, xfce has what I want so I should get xubuntu installed on my PC.

Aren't I just full of awesome and win?!

Also I might have thought that those fish swimming things are screensavers and screensavers, I think, can run any code they like. Aren't they just executables renamed and placed in the Windows directory somewhere?

i once saw a thing that rendered some deep space with planets and stuff and the camera traveled through it. looked really nice and was all 3D. dont know the name tho, sry.
edit: it was not a screensaver but kind of a "real-time rendered" wallpaper.

well if there is an avs visualization you like then you can make that your wallpaper using overlay mode. Only thing is winamp has to being running for it to work.

My external hard drive is huge on my desktop thanks to this. It dwarfs my MP3 player, as is only right.

I believe that one of the features of Vista Ultimate is the ability to use a fullscreen video as a desktop. I think it was a side-project that they just bundled in as a perk. Google reckons it's called "DreamScene".

Exactly.

If you have some looping video you want as your wallpaper you could convert it to an flv or otherwise import it into flash and then stick the flash into an html page and set it as your background. Set the width and height to 100% if you want it full screen and don't care much about the image quality...

super 2007 can convert videos to gifs, but since they get very large in mbs, i don't know if that's a good solution.

Usually videos made into Gifs look horrible because they're dithered really badly.

Edit: Widdy, you can use this: http://media.funlol.com/content/screen-lick.swf

Use the instructions here and you can paste the web address of the swf file in as a web site, and then it'll show up on your desktop. You can then set it to full screen.

Wow, I didn't know this was an option. Now I can finally have http://dojo.fi/~rancid/loituma__.swf as my wallpaper.

Please post other suggestions, since I can only handle this for a little while before it drives me insane.

But I learned something new and that's good! Screencleanin' Kit-teh now lives in Favs!

That's what I had, sound and everything. After a couple hours I turned it off, though.

Okay, so I totally had an active wallpaper already on my machine that I had completely forgotten about. It's called zmatrix, is open source, and may be useful to some of you. It's got a ton of available options. The only downside is (and I don't know whether this is by design or is a symptom of a lack of development in recent years) is that it displays between your desktop background and the icons--in other words, the icons aren't visible when it's running. But it's a fairly awesome screensaver/desktop all the same, because it can integrate with your existing background image in several ways. It's based on the popular matrix code emulation, but it's not what you're thinking. And apparently nothing like the zmatrix winamp visualization/plugin, which I haven't tried.

You might want to run it for kicks:
