It is Winamp 5.666. Yes, it is later (and greater) than the discontinued Winamp 5.7.

Latest and greatest modern skins: Big Bento Modern v1.13 & Quinto Black CT v3.1

Security with old non pathced winamp?

What about potential security problems with having a really old program that doesn't get patched?
I mean it is almost 3 years old now. I still use it and love it, but I wonder if it in some ways is a security threat?
It connects to the internet. It has its own internet browser, it runs plugins, it can be made to use windows explorer to open stuff etc...
I don't like having a program like this that isn't being patched...

First, Winamp now is such a niche product that i doubt hackers would bother. Second, the internet browser is just using trident in the system, therefore when microsoft updates your system for security holes, that would, in a sense, get patched as well.

Also, mind you, that probably the weakest link is the browser, it's not like you browse the net with it (I swear I hope you don't). So I would guess it would take downloading some malicious plug-in or malware targeting winamp specifically, or some how some black hat getting a hold of whatever domain names that are associated.

I don't know about you, but Winamp still plays my music. Is there a feature that you're missing?

Honestly, I think that's the attitude of Radionomy. Announce new version/features, and fail to deliver because the old version still plays all your music... So not cool.

Anyway, since you mention it, the de facto software program for any YouTube (and pretty much everything else) is, simply, JDownloader 2. It's Java-based and multi-platform; it will, literally, run on everything; & download everything, too.

Only be fair, when talking (great!) players - such as VLC, with built-in codecs, which are able to play /decode everything - to also take notice of the SMPlayer (yeah, among others, as well (Flow, Wimpy FLV 'n all that), sure. )

Btw., it's advertised as:

2.25 GB, with very much skins, presets, textures, wallpapers... Let's see, I need to check mine... 63mb Wow! Lol. Don't think my computer could handle all of that. Amazing setup Sabine Klare. :-)

I'm extremely happy with Winamp 5.666, that my fear of a new, updated Winamp is the current plugins not being able to work for it and we'll all have to start over from scratch. And that most of the talented coders moved on to other things by now.

Winamp 5.8 will still be able to use plugins as it's mostly a refresh with all licensed and aol based stuff removed or replaced.

Winamp is alive, and this weekend I will enjoy again very good music with very good Beyerdynamic on-ear-headphones. And with over 22000 presets and over 4500 textures I cannot get bored. Now with 2.39 GB.

Playing right now my own music on the website "Butterchurn visualizer".

And now Happy Easter, and look forward...

Okay, I know this is an exhumation at this point, but any news on the progress of Winamp 5.8? It's been a good while since we've had any news on the subject. Even a simple "**** off!" would be appreciated at this point.

the 5.8 beta was leaked, which was from October 2016, so there's that

Yes, let's count a potentially unauthorized leak of an almost 2-year-old beta version of a program we've been waiting for for twice that long as an official Winamp news update. Yes, there is that, isn't there?

It started as a dual licensed h264 webserver module, so h.264 is great. The problem comes in that it streams stuff out as "Live or on-demand video or audio streaming to HLS, HDS, Smooth, progressive and DASH" which I guess some of these would at minimum need to be supported.

If you are having trouble, youtube-dl supports HLS & DASH and some more, and is both open source and more importantly Public Domain. "youtube-dl is released into the public domain by the copyright holders."
If we could not support H.264 what will be happened next? Define in briefly.

Anything you say is right, what others say is wrong. Was always the case. And this is the big problem you have.

There was also a statistic that people don't use skins at all, so we probably have more skins available in the web than users.

I'm sure, if they release Winamp, which lacks lot of the 5.666 features people will complain about it.

You don't need these features, I do. But the big difference is, I don't say that neither you, nor me a re the majority.
So funny.

It's prima facie Koopa. Be honest, do the majority use Winamp for audio more, or video more? That's not some unknowable stat. It's just obvious audio is the answer.

Would u argue that? Bc to do so is unreasonable and frankly absurd.

This is not a knock on jtfe, it's just a similar obvious statement of fact that the majority don't use it either knowingly or unknowingly. What is in it, or is it doing, that u think the majority is flocking to?? It's absurd to suggest it's possible a majority do, just as most don't use any skin not in the official distribution, which u seem to also know is true.

As it turns out, 5.8 leaked, and jtfe still works in it, so the whole argument was pointless and moot anyway, but unfortunately Winamp has all but died in the interim of this stagnation, this needless paralysis, partially bc it's waiting on things that didn't matter (bc they still work!) as it happens. What a shame.

Many more important missing features btw, like art and metadata, have been missing in 5.666 forever now, and are still missing in 5.8 and yet 5.8 is out.

I'm sure u guys will get what u want in wacup, at least until the lawyers step in, which I hope doesn't happen but that is the nature of business.

I don't know about Winamp 5.8, but I've been using Winamp 5.666 for years now. Looks like that site earlier in the thread has been shut down but looks like Softpedia has a copy up. In fact 5.8 is there too.

What's the legal status of this?

It is sad to see that the best audio player in the history, Winamp, dies without good ending. There are some alternatives like AIMP on Windows or Audacious on Linux but still, I miss Winamp!
