The Music Reccomendation Thread

Okay, here's how it works. People can post their 3-5 favourite bands, than based on that, other people can reccomend music to them, as well as posting their favourite bands.

My 3 - Simple Plan
Sum 41
Good Charlotte

The Decemberists (all of their CDs are excellent. Check them out on the web at http://decemberists.com/ . . they have a torrent up for their latest single, which is pretty good).

Zero 7 (good music to chill to)

Sondre Lerche

Soma Sonic. Despite allmusic.com saying you should listen to Massive Attack (who I think isn't that good) I think Soma Sonic is more similar. Because other trip-hop artists like Portishead aren't as ambient and melodic as Zero 7 is.

David Holmes (Lets go get killed)
Bombay the Hard Way (Dr.Octagon/Automator and Dj Shadow)
Mr. Scruff
Herbalizer
Daedelus

Good luck lol

Actually after re-listening to the two Zero 7 albums I have, you should definitely get Cinematic Orchestra. They rescored the music to the semi-famous silent film The Man with the Movie Camera. Hell even forget I even mentioned Soma Sonic.

I would recommend:

Van Morrison - Healing Game (Jazz/Folk/Rock?)

Seba - Producer 05 (Electronic/Chill out Drum´n Bass <-- awesome)
check the GoodLooking Rec. Label !

John Scofield - Up all night (Jazz! wow if you like Pat Metheny..)

Quicksilver Messenger Service - Just for Love (kind of psychedelic Rock from the 70´s..search for soundsamples! check the track: "Fresh Air"

thats all for now

Aren't those "nu-metal" acts?

If so, I'd recommend....

Primal Scream - Evil Heat (2002)

Trust me on this one...

I'm listening to "Faggot" by MSI, sounds like Robert Smith fronting A Trillion Barnacle Lapse.

I'm not exactly a fast/death metal kinda person but after a listen to Arch Enemy I'd have to say Sepultura.

What I listen to?

The Gathering
Lacuna Coil
Stabbing Westward
Curve

Those are off the top of my head anyways.

Dimmu Borgir are a black metal/goth outfit. They're pretty good. Cradle of Filth are shitty psuedo-goth. HIM are something like trying-to-be-dark nu-metal (they, as was mentioned, refer to themselves as "love metal", but it's a pretty dodgy moniker).

Stuff I listen to a lot of right now, just gonna pick 5 out of the air:
Godspeed You! Black Emperor (instrumental loveliness)
Amplifico (local band, I'm afraid, but there's some tracks on their website, although they're older tracks now)
The Pixies (classics )
The Postal Service (so I listen to cheesy love songs. what of it?)
The Art of Noise (just started listening to this, classical meets drum and bass, very cool)

There's been a lot of recommendation things, so I'm trying to vary my usual selections. Timbaland: you would definately do well to heed Taylormemer's suggestions there.

That last big list is pretty good as well, I never really got into CKY though (although they do have a quite unique sound)

Also, whoever mentioned the Decembrists, there's a highly amusing video up on new Best Thing Ever site Ourmedia.

I couldnt find anything by Childrem of Bodom, but I checked out Arch Enemy..I like it

If you like them youll probably like Atreyu and As I Lay Dying, theyre ok..but the vocals are usually monotone screaming that gets redundant. I like orchestra in metal too, but theres none in those bands.

Edit: Lol, maybe its because I copied and pasted it from here and searched for "Childrem" instead of "Children"..Ill look again

Checked out Children of Bodom and Opeth..and I gotta say, that is bad ass! Thanks for suggesting them

What I usually do to find other bands that are similar to ones I like, is go to www.cdnow.com and do a search, and look through the 'listmanias' users make. I wouldnt know about half the bands I listen to if it wasnt for that
